Hello, my name is Vanessa Castillo.
I am 17 years old and I've been a part of The Alpha Youth Leadership Academy since the beginning. Growing up living in housing was hard for me because I was scared of being judged and laughed at by my friends for not having a house. The academy helped me to not think about that, and actually focus on something that really mattered: my future. Living in housing did not define who I was going to be in the future, my career would. Going into the academy the first year I was confused I didn't have a clear vision of my future. The academy helped me by seeing and setting a clear goal. Leading me to want to do something that I would really enjoy doing for the rest of my life. Now I have a goal, and that is to become a Psychologist .
Throughout the years the years the academy has impacted my life for good. And I'm taking with me all the lessons, eye opening, inspiring things that I've learned during the last 4 years of my life.

During the next couple of days, we will be presenting you to each of our Alpha Youth Leadership Academy students. Here goes the first one:

"My name is Nancy Garcia, I grew up half of my life in Cd. Juarez, Mexico and the other half in El Paso, Texas. When I first went to the academy I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life, or the impact the academy would have on my life. I grew up in home with an alcoholic/drug dealer "father", my mother was supportive sometimes. My home situation was hard and complicated. Now I'm a 16 year old who plans to open her own business and attend UCLA to become an actress. If it wasn't for the academy I wouldn't have this dreams or a family, a real family".

With these 11th graders we just finished developing a research proposal that is going to Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health & will later go to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
