Abara El Paso, Texas + Ciudad Juárez, CHIH

06/03/2026

On May 21st we organized a prayer gathering in a bus station parking lot outside of a detention center in El Paso - it’s called Camp East Montana.

12 different churches and orgs were represented - the desert storm blew in and blew over just before we needed to start. And we sang “Justice is flowing like a river, flowing out of you and me, flowing out into the desert, setting all the captives free!”

Thank you to everyone who came out! We will have a follow up event - a workshop with - on September 4th here at Abara.

Skills that last. Income that follows.

Haircutting and nail care are practical trades that open real economic pathways for those on the move. The services are always in demand. Startup costs are low. And the skills are needed in any community, in any country.

When people experiencing displacement gain tools to build a stable income, dignity, and connection follow. And peace becomes possible.

This is what walking alongside looks like in real time.

This morning was a long held dream come true! Through our collaboration with UTEP students in Dr. Sarah de Los Santos’ classes, we were able to give a mini border encounter for the mini-est local students. 🥹

Thank you to the wonderful UTEP volunteers who made it possible for us to host 40 Elementary aged students to learn about local history, border identity, and a bit about Abara. Young minds and hearts give us so much hope!!

We are looking forward to hosting a prayer gathering outside of one of the immigrant detention centers here in El Paso, alongside Tres Rios Border Foundation and Women of Welcome El Paso.

Come out next Thursday both to intercede and to learn how to act on behalf of the sojourner and the prisoner. We are going to pray with our words and then pray with our hands and feet.

We hope to see you there!!

Our 2025 Annual Report is here.

This past year, 283 leaders from 28 states joined Border Encounters.

Sixteen shelter partners in Juárez stayed resourced. The vision for Abara House kept taking shape.

Belonging beyond borders, one connection at a time.

“I have undrowned.”

Those three words are the title of a new story about what’s possible at the border — and why it matters.

BitterSweet Monthly spent three days in the borderlands, listening to the people and the place at the heart of Abara’s work. What they found wasn’t what most people expect from a conversation about immigration.

Read the story. Share it with someone who needs to hear it. (Link in bio)
