We work for justice and peace by serving poor and marginalized wo
men experiencing homelessness in El Paso, Texas and advocating for the voiceless, all while nurturing a life of faith. We lament the racism that continues to afflict our communities and threaten the values that we hold dear and strive to continue to use our voice and our energy to build God’s beloved community. How does it feel to ask for help and have your plea met with a look of distrust? Or, to spend the night in the unfamiliar bed of a temporary shelter, never really sleeping? For many women who are impoverished and living in El Paso, this is reality; if only during the anxious moments of a temporary crisis. Whether it's due to domestic violence, substance abuse, mental illness, incarceration, crisis pregnancy or financial instability, women have special needs as they work through their crisis. Villa Maria is a home where women who are in crisis can come for help. It's a place where they can find secure, womanly shelter, and where guidance and caring are the tools used to help them work their way from crisis to self-sufficiency. In 1958 Villa Maria, a Jesuit parish outreach, was founded to respond to the needs of elderly women who were poor and disadvantaged; in the 1970s the ministry was expanded to include elderly men. In February 2007, in response to the lack in services available to single women in crisis, Villa Maria opened its doors to meet this critical gap. But, we need your help to keep our doors open.
