Kayla Mueller, a daughter of a Past Club President with the Kiwanis Club of Prescott, Arizona, had dedicated her life to taking care of those in need – throughout the entire world. Kayla was subsequently kidnapped by ISIS while involved in a program to provide medical attention to those in need on the border of Syria. In early 2016, the President of the United States contacted Kayla’s parents to inform them that their daughter had been killed by ISIS.
In 2016, we received funds from the Kiwanis International Foundation which represented 5% of the contributions we had made as a District at that time. Kayla’s family agreed to allow us to present a Scholarship in her honor. We do not want Kayla to be forgotten, nor the impact she made on the world. The goal is to present a scholarship that goes beyond grades with a focus on young people today who are dedicating themselves unselfishly to making the world a better place.
This year, once again we have received funds from the Kiwanis International Foundation, which now represents 15% of the contributions made as a District. We have designated $3,847 for this year’s scholarship(s).
Each club which is nominating a young person for this honor will be required to have the materials completed and emailed no later than July 20, 2020. The candidates for this scholarship are not required to be a member of either Key Club or CKI. Therefore, you can reach out to your respective community. We are looking for candidates who, like Kayla, have served beyond our own borders for the betterment of humankind. An example of this type of service may be with onsite medical teams similar to Doctors Without Borders. Bottom line, the applicant has given their time to make the world a better place and make a difference throughout the world.
To make a nomination, please email a completed scholarship form (link below) and required narrative of the young person nominated. The narrative for this Scholarship is the responsibility of the nominating Kiwanis Club and not the individual nominated. Narratives completed by nominees will not be considered for the scholarship. Please submit the form by the end of the day on July 20, 2020.
