Imagine an El Paso where smoking was allowed inside workplaces, restaurants, and other public indoor spaces.

As we celebrate this milestone, we’d like to congratulate El Paso on 25 years of being smoke-free! 🎉

In 2001, El Paso made history by becoming the first major city in Texas to adopt a comprehensive smoke-free ordinance, helping protect people from secondhand smoke in indoor public spaces. Twenty-five years later, this milestone is something El Paso can be proud of as we continue working toward healthier, smoke-free spaces.

Can you imagine a time when smoking was allowed indoors? That was El Paso 25 years ago. 🚬

However, in April 2001, a Smoke-Free Paso del Norte Coalition led a drive to introduce an ordinance to protect nonsmoking people from secondhand smoke in public spaces.

The smoke-free ordinance was passed in June 2001.

Nowadays, you can go into public spaces and enjoy a smoke-free space. 🚭

How would you feel if smoking was still allowed in restaurants today?

After the smoke-free ordinance passed in 2001, smoking rates in El Paso dropped from 24% to under 10%.

Before 2002, non-smokers were affected by secondhand smoke without a choice. The smoke-free ordinance changed that.

Yesterday, the El Paso Commissioners Court recognized the 25th anniversary of the El Paso Smoke-Free Ordinance. This milestone is a chance to celebrate how far our community has come and to recognize that the work continues.

Imagine walking into a restaurant, workplace, or other public space 25 years ago and having to deal with secondhand smoke.

In 2001, El Paso took a major step toward protecting residents from secondhand smoke by adopting its Smoke-Free Ordinance.

The Paso del Norte Health Foundation supported community efforts advocating for the ordinance, which helped make indoor smoking in public places and workplaces a thing of the past.
