Over the last decade, the Hope Border Institute's Humanitarian Action program has emerged as one of the most adaptive and faith-driven responses to the needs of vulnerable migrants on the US-Mexico border. From our Accompaniment Program to the Border Refugee Assistance Fund, HOPE's humanitarian work reflects willingness of faith communities on both sides of a wall to act as one body.

Since its inception in 2019, the Border Refugee Assistance Fund, a joint initiative of Hope Border Institute and Bishop Mark Seitz, has provided humanitarian assistance to thousands of migrants and their families at the US-Mexico border.

Enforcement once concentrated at the border is now happening across the country.

In our report published earlier this year with DHIA, Kino Border Initiative / Iniciativa Kino para la Frontera, Casa del Migrante Saltillo, Servicio Jesuita a Refugiados México, Centro de Atención al Migrante Exodus, Casa para Migrantes Jesús Torres and albergue diocesano ‘Belen’ — through the Red Pedro Pantoja found that Interior arrests by ICE jumped from 1 in 3 deportees in 2024 to nearly 4 in 5 in 2025.

Enforcement isn’t just at our border. It’s all over our country. And it demands an urgent and prophetic response from all of us.

Though daily we are united in grief, we choose hope and faith. Hope that tomorrow can be better than today. Faith in a God who sides with the dispossessed. Belief in love’s power.

Policies of mass detention have true, deep effects on our neighbors, our parishioners and our communities.

As Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller (Archdiocese of San Antonio) writes in his pastoral letter, ‘We Will Come to You,’ released this week on the 100th anniversary of the elevation of the Archdiocese, ‘immigrant detention is not a distant story we watch on the evening news, but a real crisis on conscience that we grapple with ourselves in the local Church.’

And this response demands all of us.

We will come to you. Not with comfort. Not with the language that makes us feel better about ourselves. But with the willingness to stand in wreckage and say: Your dignity is not negotiable. Your life is not disposable. We will not look away.

Whether the Church in the United States keeps that promise is up to us.'
