You only have a few more days to leave public comment on the proposed K-12 social studies TEKS and literary lists containing Bible material. Educators, families and community members must stand together for honest, inclusive and accurate education for our students. If you believe that preachers are for Sunday schools, not public schools, make your voice heard to the State Board of Education by June 15.

Review the proposed TEKS and lists and submit comments: bit.ly/4afKIRG

EPISD has warned the state that it will lay off almost 250 people. This all comes from a letter the district sent to the Texas Workforce Commission on Sunday, where the district notified the commission of the jobs it will cut due to ongoing funding issues. https://bit.ly/4eFM6Q4

EPISD began notifying employees today of their termination of their contract due to a reduction in force after the district declared financial exigency or bankruptcy.

There is one important action that we are advising that you DO NOT DO - DO NOT RESIGN under any circumstances. If you sign the resignation letter that is attached to your notice, you lose your ability to qualifiy for unemployment benefits. TSTA will also not be able to help you through this process, including the hearing that you are entitled to.

It was also communicated that you could not apply for any vacancies that you may be qualified for. Please read what our TSTA Chief Legal Counsel states:

"To expand upon my notes below, anyone who is affected by the RIF and not terminated for misconduct is eligible to apply for unemployment. They are also eligible to apply for any position that will not be eliminated by the RIF in the district if they hold the necessary qualifications for the position prior to their discharge. They may need to request a hearing following receipt of the official notice while they explore their employment opportunities."

Tomorrow an email will go out to all members that provides more. legal information .

Again, if you received notification, please contact the TSTA Help Center immediately at 1-877-275-8782 and leave a detailed message. Also contact us at 915-479-7867 so that we can assist you immediately.

In Texas, it doesn’t take much for the state to take over public school districts. Meanwhile, recent state laws have made it harder for these districts to challenge the education commissioner’s “final and unappealable” decision to take them over.
