Check out this thoughtful article on the Darién Gap and the potentially worsening implications of recent multi-national campaigns surrounding the route. Annually, thousands of migrants travel this infamous route by foot to reach America. A migrant’s journey through this dangerous route represents the desperation they have to flee corruption, violence, and inhumane conditions in their countries, and seek refuge in America. These onerous attempts symbolize the drastic measures people would endure to seek sanctuary, not only for themselves, but for their loved ones, even in a world where asylum is virtually non-existent. As Americans, we would do the same if we had to, so why choose to perpetuate their pain in their trek to a better life?

The gender inequality and discrimination that women experience every day make life harder and more dangerous for women and girls who become refugees. Women fleeing conflict and persecution are at increased risk of trafficking and exploitation, forced marriage, and gender-based violence.

ALL of us deserve to live in safety. A better life for refugee communities begins with more power for refugee women and girls.
