Women Veterans Recognition Day

The 1948 Women’s Armed Services Integration Act was a major milestone in the history of women’s service to the nation. For the first time, women, other than nurses, were granted permanent, regular membership in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force. Prior to this, women were essentially “temporary help” during the crisis, then sent home when the trouble was over – no longer needed.

Women have served in America’s wars and conflicts throughout our history. They played vital roles in the Revolutionary War, serving as soldiers, raising morale, and spying on the enemy. It is known that some even disguised themselves as men to be able to serve.

The Comrades of VFW Post 2451 were hard at work this past week. They helped prepare a community dinner that fed over 400 people as well as delivered food to over 100 veterans, the elderly and sick. Outstanding job to each Comrade.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is proud to announce 162 service members and veterans were selected as recipients of the VFW’s “Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship” for the upcoming 2023 fall semester. The student veterans will collectively receive nearly $750,000 in post-secondary scholarships to help them achieve their academic goals while lessening their student loan burden.

Please help us congratulate Ms. Andreas Harkless on being selected as the 2022 winner of the Smart/Maher VFW Citizenship Education Teacher Award for VFW Post No. 2451 and District 10. It is always a beautiful day when you can recognize the hard work our teachers do in our community!!
