· Do you enjoy networking with the local community?

· Are you interested in promoting arts, crafts, creative writing, or music? El Monte

Women's Club members care and volunteer their time to improve the community, while making new friends, learning new skills, and having fun! You can bring a friend along or just visit us and meet your future friends! For your first visit, you are our special guest; there is no charge, and you don't have to bring anything. We currently meet every 4th Tuesday of the month, at 11:00 AM, at the lovely El Monte Community Center, followed by a potluck lunch. Evening meetings are being planned for the near future. At the monthly Meet & Greet general meetings, you will hear about our activities and events. Some of these include community service projects, fundraisers for our college scholarship fund, an annual fashion show, student art and music contests, as well as both creative writing and crafts contests for club members. You can choose to be as actively involved as you like, based on your time, passions and interests. If you decide to join El Monte Women's Club, membership provides opportunities to meet new people, make new friends, have fun, develop leadership skills, help the community, and contribute towards scholarships. New member dues are $50 (April - March) and include EMWC membership, a name badge, membership card, membership certificate, membership pin, copy of the EMWC Yearbook, subscription to the EMWC Schooner newsletter, and also membership in the San Gabriel Valley District of Women’s Clubs, the California Federation of Women’s Clubs, and the national General Federation of Women’s Club. Membership renewal is $40 per year (April - March). As a member, you will buy one ticket to the EMWC annual Fashion Show ($25 in 2017) and one ticket to another EMWC fund-raising event ($30 in 2017) that enables scholarships. You will also serve on one lunch committee. El Monte Women's Club has been volunteering in the community since 1902. For more information on Women's Club, please visit cfwc.org and gfwc.org

Happy ! ✨ For 30 years, the NWHM has worked to ensure that women’s history is visible, accessible, and fully integrated into the story of our nation.

This work is not secondary to American history. It *is* American history.

This month (like every month!), we're excited to engage with our communities through virtual programming, amplify women's achievements across all fields, and spotlight lesser-known trailblazers, including:

✈️ Hazel Ying Lee, the first Chinese American woman to fly for the U.S. military, serving as a Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) ferry pilot during World War II

🗣️ Susette LaFlesche Tibbles (Bright Eyes), an Omaha woman who spent her entire life tirelessly campaigning for Native American rights as a speaker, activist, interpreter, and writer

📰 Nellie Bly, whose undercover reporting not only raised awareness about mental health treatment and led to improvements in institutional conditions, but also ushered in an age of investigative journalism

🪸 Joan Murrell Owens, the first Black woman marine biologist, geologist, and paleontologist who discovered a new genus of button coral

🏳️‍🌈 Laura M. Esquivel, a lifelong activist and cofounder of Latino(a) Le***an and Gay Organization (LLEGÓ) who's often referred to as “La Madre” of the Latino LGBTQ+ movement

🗽 Emma Lazarus, a Jewish American writer and activist whose words “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,” are almost as well-known as the Statue of Liberty they're engraved on

🎨 Edmonia Lewis, the first professional Black and Native American sculptor in the U.S. who used her art to depict the stories of women and Indigenous people with reverence and beauty

⚖️ Sylvia Mendez, who, at age 8, played an instrumental role in Mendez v. Westminster, the landmark 1946 case that successfully ended de jure segregation in California

🪖 Maya Lin, a renowned artist and architect who began her career creating the Vietnam War Memorial at 21 years old after winning a national search competition with her innovative minimal design
