Michael McDonald was just 14 years old when he fathered a baby boy and placed him for adoption.

60 years later, they’ve reunited for the first time.

Before the Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, and his solo career, Michael McDonald and his girlfriend became parents at just 14. Together, they decided to place their baby boy for adoption.

The baby boy was adopted by Paul and Kay Goessling. They named him Michael and raised him in St. Louis.

Little Michael grew up knowing he was adopted, but had no idea who his biological parents were.

Until his half-brother took a 23andMe test and the two connected online…

At the age of 58, little Michael met his birth mother in person.

Then he spoke to his birth father over the phone…

When his father said he was a musician touring through St. Louis, Michael asked: “Are you Michael McDonald?”

His response? “Yeah, I'm afraid so…"

For decades, Michael McDonald and his son’s birth mother had wondered about their baby boy.

"We always talked about him. And it always came down to our greatest fear was, how did life treat him? I always carried that guilt with me.”

He expressed gratitude to the adoptive parents who raised his son:

“[J]ust to know that he was okay and that he had a good life, and a life certainly that I wouldn't have been able to afford him at that time, was a great reward. The real rock stars in this story are his adoptive parents."

Adoption can be a beautiful decision shaped by love, courage, and dignity. It can be a gift to a child as it was for Michael Goessling.

It can also be a gift to the biological parents who want what is best for their child:

This video depicts a big part of the ‘why’ for what we do at Hannah. This is Toni McFadden sharing her own abortion experience. She is not and was not a client of Hannah, but hers is the story of so many women. Statistically, 1 in 4.

At Hannah, we love seeing the lives of unborn babies saved. But we don’t believe that it’s just about the baby. We see those women (and men) who come in scared and confused and who sometimes feel they are in a hopeless situation. We help them navigate their options, but we don’t just leave it at that. We surround them with support and help them help themselves through our programs. We are there for them if they choose to parent their baby. We will walk alongside them if they choose adoption. And while we do not recommend not refer for abortion, we help ensure all our clients have the information they need to make a fully informed decision. There is no judgment. No coercion. If they choose abortion, we are still there for them through our post-abortion support program led by a woman who has been there. Not every woman regrets having an abortion, but we are there for any and all women or men who do.

Abortion is not an easy way out. It hurts. And it takes the life of an innocent baby.
Choose hope. Choose life.
