Wellness Wednesday!

Staff Spotlight: Sheena!

Here's what Sheena had to say about her work at Sunlight Children's Services:

"Every family has a different story, different challenges, and different strengths. I love supporting them through the difficult moments and also being there to help celebrate the victories.

I wish more people knew that Child Advocacy Centers do much more than respond to child sexual abuse cases. We also support children and families affected by physical abuse, violent crime, and other traumatic experiences. In addition to conducting forensic interviews and coordinating investigations, we serve as a resource hub - connecting families with mental health services, victim advocacy, community resources, and ongoing support. Our goal is to help children and families navigate the healing process and ensure they don't have to face it alone - they have a team behind them!

So many children come through our doors feeling scared, stressed, confused, or even angry. One of the most rewarding parts is watching those emotions shift as they realize they're in a safe place and that someone is listening.
When a child who was nervous and guarded when they arrived leaves with a smile or even gives you the biggest hug, those moments stay with you. You know that you've helped the child find the courage to tell their story and use their voice. Knowing that I can be part of their healing journey is what keeps me coming back every day."

Staff Spotlight: Macie Briggs

This month, we're highlighting the incredible professionals who serve children and families through our Child Advocacy Center.

Macie serves as a Forensic Interviewer and Family Advocate, and here's what she had to say about her work:

"My favorite part of serving children and their families is allowing a safe place for families to come and talk about what's going on in their lives. Being able to check in with these families and connecting them with resources is such an impactful moment for myself, and I love being a part of their healing journey. Being that sort of first step in the process of healing for families and getting them started with our services is so powerful and serves as a reminder that you never truly know what is going on in others' lives. Leading with empathy and compassion goes a long way and can help others tremendously in any given situation!

I wish more people knew that we are a trauma-informed center. We have an amazing team, and our focus is to do things in the best interest of the children and families we serve. We all go through thorough trainings and our experiences range greatly, which helps us provide wrap around services to our community. We help families get connected with a multitude of resources within the community and are always willing to help families navigate situations that may be difficult or feel impossible. Support, clarity, and a sense of normalcy are all things we strive to help our families obtain.

What keeps me motivated in this line of work is the small wins. Knowing I was the reason someone smiled or laughed makes me feel empowered. Having those small impacts in someone's day can make a huge difference in their life. Every day I aim to make someone feel better about their situation whether that be by making them feel seen, heard, or appreciated. Knowing I can make small differences each day I show up, builds momentum to keep going!"
