Bernadette had lost several babies before she finally received prenatal care and skilled support during delivery.

When labor stalled, her midwife recognized the signs and arranged a hospital transfer in time. Today, she holds a healthy baby.

Her story shows what changes when a family has access to care — and when someone nearby knows when to act.

Myth: Complications only happen in high-risk pregnancies.

Fact: Many birth emergencies can happen even when no one expected them. A pregnancy may seem normal — and still become dangerous within minutes during labor or after birth.

That’s why safe birth cannot depend only on “risk” being visible in advance. Every mother needs access to skilled care, families who take warning signs seriously, and a health system that can respond when complications arise.

This is why awareness and trained care belong together:
— Families need to know when to seek help
— Midwives need the skills to respond fast
— Facilities need supplies and referral pathways
— Communities need to take symptoms seriously

Awareness helps people understand when to seek help. Skilled care makes sure help is there when it matters.

Awareness can be life-saving.

When families recognize warning signs early, they can seek care sooner. And in childbirth, sooner can mean everything.

Warning signs matter:
— Severe bleeding
— Fever
— Seizures
— Severe pain
— A baby that isn’t moving well

These symptoms should never be ignored. The sooner care begins, the better the chance of survival.

But awareness is not about putting responsibility on mothers alone. It’s about building support around them: families who know what to watch for, communities that take warning signs seriously, and health workers who are ready when help is needed.
Safe birth starts before the emergency.

Every trained midwife carries new skills back into her community.

She may deliver babies in a crowded clinic. Teach younger students. Recognize danger earlier. Act faster when minutes matter. And pass confidence on to others around her.

That is the ripple effect of training.

It starts with one midwife — but it reaches mothers, babies, families, and entire communities.

Severe bleeding after birth is one of the leading causes of maternal death.

It can happen fast. In facilities without blood banks or surgical teams on standby, the midwife is often the first person who can recognize the danger and respond.

That’s why hemorrhage management is part of hands-on midwife training.

Midwives practice how to recognize warning signs, estimate blood loss, and respond quickly with the right care — building confidence before emergencies happen.

One skill can change everything.

Today is International Day of the Midwife.

Midwives make safe birth possible. They are often the first to recognize complications, the first to respond, and the steady hands mothers and babies depend on when minutes count.

Today, we honor their skill, courage, and care — and the training that helps them act with confidence when it matters most.

At Hawa’s Hope, we believe trained midwives save lives.

Our team is on the ground in Sierra Leone, training midwives.

This training is practical, hands-on, and focused on the moments that matter most during childbirth.

Midwives work with the 4R Framework:

— Readiness: preparing for safe birth
— Recognition: spotting complications early
— Response: acting fast when minutes count
— Reporting: learning from every case

But the real difference happens through practice. Midwives rehearse essential skills like hemorrhage management, breech birth, and vacuum-assisted delivery — hands-on, not just in theory.

Because confidence comes from training. And trained midwA look inside our recent midwife training in Sierra Leone.
