One critic described the film as “one of the greatest rock documentaries…as eloquent an evocation of the reality-distortion field around rock stars as D.A. Pennebaker’s 'Don’t Look Back' or Robert Frank’s 'Co******er Blues,' but funnier and stranger than either.”

This Thursday: “A Poem is a Naked Person”

Join us for an outdoor screening of Les Blank’s documentary about 70s rock icon Leon Russell.

Les Blank directed, filmed, and edited this documentary throughout 1972-1974, but due to creative conflict with Leon Russell, it was not released and was rarely shown in public. Les Blank’s son, Harrod, came to terms with Russell to remaster and release the film more than forty years later.

We’ll be showing the film Thursday at 7pm at 10341 San Pablo Avenue in El Cerrito, CA. Don’t miss it!

Mentored by Pete Seeger, discovered by Louis Armstrong, with Bob Dylan bringing his songs to her and Bonnie Raitt drawing inspiration from her work, Dane stood at the center of major cultural movements. She launched the career of the Chambers Brothers and helped shape Jane Fonda’s politics, raising a compelling question: Why isn’t Barbara Dane a household name?
