E-Moto Enforcement
Over the past week, El Cerrito Police officers have issued citations and impounded three illegal e-Motos as part of our ongoing efforts to keep pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists safe.
Many of these e-Motos are not electric bicycles under California law. Vehicles that have no pedals, are throttle-only, exceed 20 mph, and/or have motors over 750 watts may be classified as off-highway vehicles (OHV) rather than e-bikes.
These off-road vehicles are not legal to operate on El Cerrito streets or trails-including the Ohlone Greenway.
An impound can be costly. Owners may face up to $500-600, or more, in towing and impound-related fees.
ECPD officers will be focusing enforcement efforts on illegal e-Motos to help protect the safety of everyone using our streets and trails.
Know what you’re riding, know where you can legally ride it, and help us keep El Cerrito safe for everyone.
