Developing Indigenous Resources - DIR - USA Facilitating sustainable development of local resources so people are empowered to solve their own problems

Our Vision and Mission

Working with residents in economically poor communities, DIR builds knowledge and skills to help all citizens achieve a level of health that empowers them to PARTICIPATE fully in social and economic development. To deliver the highest level of long-term impact, DIR targets its efforts on healthy development of infants and children, and works most closely with women of child

-bearing AGE. Ultimately, results are achieved not by DIR, but by the men, women and children in the community. The DIR model is built on evidence that sustainable solutions evolve when LOCAL PEOPLE are empowered to tackle their own problems. To PROMOTE BETTER HEALTH and support personal development, DIR focuses ACTION along a pathway that fosters high levels of community engagement and personal interaction. Recognizing that communities in which it operates have many needs, DIR also engages in efforts to provide high-quality schools to prepare young students for further education and to enable individuals, particularly women, to generate income through the provision of training, equipment and micro-credit.

Project Alambana aims to uplift the children of ragpickers, with a special focus on empowering girls. Every day, we welcome them to the DIR center, where their day begins with a warm bath followed by a nutritious, protein-rich breakfast. This routine cares for their immediate physical needs and prepares them for a day of learning at our School With A Difference, where dedicated teachers start from the basics building up each child’s academic abilities and confidence. Our ultimate goal is to integrate these bright young minds into mainstream schools and get them their basic rights of nutrition and education.

We are proud to report that nine of our determined students have recently gained admission to local schools - a testament to their hard work and the effectiveness of Project Alambana.

However, to continue making this significant impact, we need your support! It costs only $16 per month to provide one child with education, nutritious meals, clothing, and shoes. This modest investment can dramatically change the trajectory of their lives by ensuring they continue to receive these essential services through local Health Promoters.

Together, we can help these children escape the cycle of poverty and exploitation. Please visit our donation page to start your monthly donation or learn more about how you can help.

US Board Member Gupta visited DIR in June '24 with her son and met with the Health Promoters (HPs), saw under-nourished children being fed nutritious meals, heard children reciting poems in English, sewing vocational training in action, and went with the HPs on their round in the slum where infants were weighed and health coaching was given to parents; in short, witnessed the life-changing work that DIR does!

From DIR CEO, Dr. Asha Katosh
This summer season in India has been rather peculiar, with heat and humidity at its extreme and a very late arrival of the monsoon, almost towards the end of September. Further, the month of September brought non-stop heavy downpour with sudden fluctuations in temperature, which made a lot of people, specifically children fall under the weather. There was a wave of viral fever and upper respiratory tract infections, which led to a visible drop in the SWAD school's attendance.

Last month the Prime Minister of India Narender Modi ji laid focus on population control, in his Independence Day speech, and urged the citizens to pay heed to the issue of rapidly growing population. Staying on par with his message, DIR-India team started working on the data collection and statistics of families with high number of children, especially after we received a few reports regarding the cases of multiple pregnancies. The Medical team along with the senior staff has already started the survey of Janta and Safeda Colony to collect the current data of families with three or more children. It was also observed that, after 13 years of sincere work on family planning by DIR-India, the current ratio of multiple pregnancies is much less as compared to 2006. But despite our awareness programs and efforts, there are still 2-3 families with more than 3 children in each Health Promoter’s assigned areas. It is encouraging to know that the younger generation is the most firm believer in 1-2 child policy. Our survey report has given us the graphic display of number of pregnancy and the number of children in each family, which will further help us in making our solutions more customized to their needs.
