Join El Cerrito Trail Trekkers and popular tour leader Rodney Paul on a Berkeley Rocks Walk on Saturday, Sept. 19 from 10 am to 12 pm. Millions of years before the first humans arrived, North Berkeley was strewn with rock formations. Today the area includes lovely parks where remnants of its geologic past can be seen. We'll talk about the Native American presence and discuss the creation of the parks and their role in the first housing developments. Tour ends at Great Stoneface Park, a 15 minute walk from our start. 1.5 miles, 300 feet elevation gain. Bring poles if needed. Meet: In the amphitheater of John Hinkel Park, 41 Somerset Place, Berkeley

REMINDER--Join El Cerrito Trail Trekkers for Greening the Greenway, Saturday, July 18, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meet at the Ohlone Greenway at Fairmount Avenue, across from El Cerrito Plaza BART Station.

In the early 1990s El Cerrito’s two-mile stretch of the Ohlone Greenway had exactly one tree – until someone cut it down. For the verdant landscape we have there today thanks must go to volunteers, a city contract arborist, and a dedicated city official and staff. Let’s walk the Greenway while hearing from Steve Price, organizer and lead volunteer, and Steve Batchelder, then the city’s consulting arborist. Every block along the Greenway has its own story – including the mysterious Dinosaur Forest.

NOTE: This flat, two-mile walk ends at Del Norte BART.

Have to miss it? We'll do it again on Sunday, November 15, 2026, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Co-sponsored by the El Cerrito Trail Trekkers and the El Cerrito Historical Society

THIS WEEKEND! El Cerrito’s 12th Annual Hillside Festival on May 2–3 is back with a mix of old favorites and brand new hikes and events. More than a dozen events will entertain and educate both young and old about the plants, animals, geology and history of El Cerrito’s 100-acre natural wonderland, the Hillside Natural Area.

Visit www.ectrailtrekkers.org/hillside-festival.html for the full schedule. Events start from trailheads throughout the Hillside and touch on native flora and fauna, insects, geology, fire safety, and habitat restoration. Our leaders are experts in their fields.
Events especially for young people include the ever-popular Nature Scavenger Hunt (with prizes) and Insect Exploration. Haiku by the haiku contest winners will be read during a Haiku Hike and displayed throughout the hillside. We’ll end the festival with snacks and bluegrass music by El Cerrito-based Fresh Picked band. All events are free!
