In honor of National Volunteer Week, ECOPA wishes to extend a true and heartfelt thanks to our volunteers past and present, whose dedication has allowed ECOPA to achieve so much since its inception. The array of skills, interest and spirit of commitment from each and every one of our volunteers since 2016 has immeasurably enriched and emboldened our work and vision! We could not be the organization we are becoming, nor engage in the exciting collaborations we have been developing, without our volunteers.

On this day 42 years ago, Salvadoran Archbishop Saint Oscar Romero was assassinated by a sniper as he celebrated mass in San Salvador.
Today, ECOPA remembers Romero's legacy of speaking out against injustice and repression as we incorporate these values in our work with our partners. "Constructive work is a welcome antidote to the dispiriting effects of the world’s news and its catastrophes. We hope you are finding comfort in the progress you make each day." - Adele Negro, Executive Director

Happy International Women's Day from ECOPA!

Today, we want to highlight an initiative by our partner organization, the Mangrove Association, which stimulates women’s entrepreneurship in agriculture to promote food security and economic development. Thanks to their fundraising efforts for this initiative:

*12 families have started native poultry farms to strengthen family nutrition
*4 families are growing their own vegetables in a healthier way without using toxic chemicals
*10 families are planting corn to help feed more people in their communities, and
*3 families have improved their irrigation systems for orchards and vegetable plots

Today, and every day, we celebrate the power, tenacity, and contributions of women to their communities everywhere. We are proud to work with organizations like the Mangrove Association, that are supporting the empowerment of women as leaders and models in their communities!

Meet one of our amazing grassroots partner organizations in El Salvador that strives to address the ecological issues facing the area - The Mangrove Association or Asociación Mangle - They support interconnected grassroots social movements in the Lower Lempa River and Jiquilisco Bay area with programs focusing on advocacy and citizen participation, the environment and climate change, agroecological production, youth development, and women’s empowerment. Currently, ECOPA is supporting Asociación Mangle in their initiatives to improve food security in the region and providing essential capacity building to ensure their programs are able to expand to additional communities. Do you know about the ecological issues that ECOPA’s partner organizations are striving to improve? In a region like the Bajo Lempa that relies on farming and fishing, maintaining a healthy ecosystem is crucial for a sustainable community. The region is part of the mangrove ecosystem, an extremely biodiverse area that is essential for carbon sequestration. Historically, monoculture, deforestation, and blast fishing have led to soil and water contamination and weakened the environmental resiliency of this region. ECOPA’s partner organizations based in the Bajo Lempa are working hard to support these sustainable vibrant communities, while safeguarding the important ecosystem they share. ECOPA provides a network of cross border collaboration and support for these projects, building diverse support networks for a variety of community needs.
