Yesterday, Mt. Carmel High School hosted us for our heart screening. We screened 665 young hearts and found 6 previously unknown heart abnormalities - 4 of which are at risk of sudden cardiac arrest. We also trained nearly 1,000 people on hands-only CPR and how to use an AED.

This is why screening organizations like ours exist. To find the 1 in 300 children with an unknown heart abnormality. No symptoms, no history, yet very much at risk of sudden cardiac arrest.

Our Mt Carmel screening is nearly at capacity, but we have plenty of openings for our screenings in October and December.

We have found over a dozen cases of Mitral Valve Prolapse. Mitral Valve Prolapse is a type of heart valve disease that affects the left heart chambers. It can sometimes cause blood to leak backward across the valve, called mitral valve regurgitation.

It was an honor to attend Assemblymember Dr. LaShae Sharp-Collins's 2nd Annual Community Recognition event this past weekend. We have identified over a dozen cases of Atrial septal defect (ASD) at our screenings. Atrial septal defect is present at birth, people with ASD have a hole between their upper heart chambers.

The next most common heart abnormality we find at our screenings is Long QT syndrome. We have identified nearly 20, previously unknown, cases.

Long QT syndrome is a heart rhythm disorder that causes fast and chaotic heartbeats.
