We have begun handing out flyers for the July 29th Community Meeting at the tree farm (see attached).

We need to get the word out - we've handed out the first 150 to the houses on the west end of Pepper Drive - we need help on the balance from Pepper Drive Elementary to the east.

THESE NEED TO BE HANDED OUT ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, JULY 18th & 19th to make sure people get enough notice.

Specifically, we could use help handing out flyers on:

What is a Tree Colonade?

The west end of Pepper Drive is home to a unique feature in the county – a Tree Colonade. It’s the only double-lined tree row left in the County, to our knowledge. This stand is likely around 100 years old – and in danger of being removed. Why is this important?

1) It’s a piece of El Cajon history. At a time when there are few remainders of what our part of the county looked like 100 years ago, it’s a reminder of our special, rural past

2) They can’t be replaced. County standards have changed – if these are removed, policy is that no trees will be replanted. Cities will plant trees and maintain them – county projects are one-time installations with no provisions to care for landscaping – much less the 5 years of watering that it takes to establish a mature tree and the ongoing pruning.

3) They provide shade. From a practical standpoint, they make a nice base for a sidewalk that is comfortable to walk on.

4) They provide value. People want to move to, live in and walk around neighborhoods that are inviting. It makes our neighborhood different, special and, ultimately, increases home values in the area.

COUNTY PARKS & RECREATION CALL - we had a great call with a team of 4 people from the San Diego County Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) on May 23rd.

ON THE CALL:
- Rod Streeper - Fix Pepper Drive Association
- Sean Hill – Coordinator of meeting
- Jen Spencer – will be our main contact
- Emily Hubbard – secondary contact
- Mark Kieser – Land Use and Zoning – see map

We discussed:

- Coordinate with Lakeside Community Planning Group – we need to be on their Fall Survey for parks
- 3 of 4 Parcels owned by County – Department of Public Works (DPW) - see map attached
- Airport parcels listed as “undeveloped”
- DPW lease to Family Tree Farm is up in a year or two
- Currently zoned “open space”

We need to ensure we are listed as a stakeholder on the annual interest list submitted by the Lakeside CPG to the DPR in the fall
