The City’s latest budget proposal would cut the number of first responders available on El Cajon streets when residents call 911. On Tuesday, June 23, the El Cajon City Council will consider the final budget and decide whether to keep Squad 6 in service.

Squad 6 is a firefighter-paramedic response unit — a smaller, faster, custom-equipped Ford F-250 staffed with first responders — that operates out of Station 6, the busiest fire station in El Cajon and one of the busiest in San Diego County.

Last year, Squad 6 responded to nearly 5,000 emergency calls, including medical emergencies, rescues, and other life-threatening 911 calls where a full fire engine or ladder truck may not be the fastest or most available resource.

City officials call it a budget adjustment. For residents, it means fewer first responders available when they call 911.

El Cajon residents are encouraged to attend the June 23 City Council meeting and show support for keeping Squad 6 in the final budget.
