Trails Talk!
Lessons learned
Developing Green Bay’s Fox River Trail
With Door County Tri Race Director Sean Ryan

-It took energy, advocacy, patience and perseverance to build Green Bay’s Fox River Trail, but in the end the trail helped build the community. That was the message Door County Triathlon Race Director Sean Ryan delivered to a roomful of trail supporters at Write On Door County in Juddville Thursday night.

Dispelling unfounded fear of trail crime and litter, Ryan said real estate along the trail is now highly coveted for its proximity to a path that promotes a vibrant, active lifestyle.

Its been 25-years since Ryan led the charge to convince the community a trail would pump life into the city’s heart. Today, this trail has become a welcoming place for people of all ages and abilities to bike, walk, run and roll down a ribbon of lively joy.

We’re thrilled and thankful Door County is now heading down the same path, and we appreciate you joining us on the journey!

🚨 HUGE NEWS FOR THE FUTURE OF DOOR COUNTY TRAILS! 🌲🚴‍♀️✨
👉This is one of the biggest milestones yet for the future of connected trails in Door County.

💥Door County Trails is excited to announce that award-winning trails engineer Samantha Herheim at Madison-based KL Engineering has officially been contracted to help lead the next phase of planning for the Door County Strategic Master Trails Plan!

🔥What started as a grassroots, volunteer-led vision for safe, scenic, connected walking and biking trails throughout Door County is gaining real momentum — and this announcement marks a major leap forward.

👍Samantha "Sam" Herheim brings more than two decades of experience designing some of Wisconsin’s most celebrated trail systems, including Madison’s award-winning stunning Lower Yahara River Trail and boardwalk. Her expertise includes navigating sensitive wetlands, protecting forests and shorelines, designing complex boardwalk systems, and helping communities create trails that fit naturally into the landscape people treasure most.
(Exactly the kind of expertise we need in Door County.)

This is an incredible time for Door County Trails and the future of trails in Door County… we’re just getting started!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️We’re also thrilled that this exciting announcement was recently featured in the Peninsula Pulse Newspaper! Story link here: https://doorcountypulse.com/herheim-to-lead-next-phase-of-trail-planning/

🫶Thank you to every donor, volunteer, local leader, business owner, advocate, and community member helping turn this vision into reality. The future of trails in Door County has never looked brighter. 🌿💚

❤️ What a Valentine’s Day turnout in Fish Creek! ❤️
Yesterday’s final public open house was filled with energy, thoughtful ideas, and meaningful conversation. Thank you to everyone who came out to share your voice about the future of trails in Door County!

We were grateful to have Sophie Parr, our urban planner from Chastain & Associates and Craig Charles, published author and Door County Trails board member, guiding the conversation and moderating a lively Q&A session.

From the presentation to the hands-on mapping session, attendees leaned in — literally! Large maps filled quickly with suggested routes, connection ideas, and thoughtful notes about how trails can safely link our communities, schools, workplaces, and favorite outdoor destinations.

The conversations didn’t stop when the formal program ended — small groups gathered, neighbors connected, and new ideas sparked around the room. It was exactly what community planning should look like.

This long-range plan will guide where future walking and bicycling trails should go across Door County — and yesterday’s turnout showed just how much people care about getting it right.

Thank you for showing up, sharing your thoughts, and helping shape a more connected Door County. 🚶‍♀️🚴‍♂️🌲
