The Romans wore thick leather-soled sandals with straps around the ankles and nails in the soles to provide a stable, firm grip. Our military learned valuable lessons about the importance of shoes for soldiers during the Vietnam War. “Jungle Rot” became a matter of foot care and life or death. So, unique footwear for the brutal jungle environment became a priority. A similar thing happened with our soldiers in the deserts of the Middle East. So, another unique desert footwear was designed to prevent debilitating blisters, guard against extreme temperatures, and protect feet from dangerous wildlife. How much more important are the shoes of the soldiers of Christ who bring the most important message ever given to men. We, the soldiers of the cross, have the same message that was given to the Virgin Mary, the faithful shepherds, and to Jesus’ disciples. The shoes that we are to put on are the shoes of the Good News of peace, BUT we can’t tell others about the Peace of Christ unless we know the Peace of Christ ourselves. The Peace of Christ is you and I learning to rest in the finished work of Christ on the Cross that defeats sin and helps us stand firm against the storms of the enemy. The word that Paul uses means “to be made whole.” Peace is NOT the absence of problems, trials, chaos, frustration, storms, or trifflin’ people. Peace is the complete rest, calm, and confidence of salvation in the midst of these because of what Christ has done as the Risen Savior. How do I put on the Shoes of Peace and walk in Him as my Standard Operating Procedure?
I must recognize I am a sinner in need of a Savior. I must repent of my sin and allow the peace of Christ to change the way I think. I have to give my problems, anxieties, worries, and temptations to Christ through prayer with thanksgiving so that the peace of God can guard my mind and spirit. I must let His peace rule my life and walk in His peace. We have to change the way we live, talk, and act so that, as soldiers of the cross, we reflect the Good News of the Peace that Christ offers.
Take time today to thank Jesus for His peace that brings us complete salvation and rest.
