If you drove by Columbus Elementary School recently, you may have been alarmed to see an unmanned Barbie Jeep driving around cones in the school’s parking lot. Although there was no driver on board the Barbie Jeep, it was being quite carefully driven by Columbus Elementary fifth graders in a classro...

120 fifth graders drove the rover today using First Person View (FPV) video equipment. Students used virtual reality goggles and a projected image to drive while others monitored progress watching from the windows. The next phase of the project will be fully autonomous operation in spring. Check out the pictures in the photo section of this page!

120 fifth graders drove the rover today. No damage to people or equipment. The next step will be installing the video system for First Person View driving. The next hands on experience will be just before Christmas.

Tomorrow is Rover unveil and test drive day at Columbus! Hopefully we can also discuss the components of the video system and brainstorm ideas for the installation.

Project update.

I have produced a series of 5 minute video segments that are intended to guide the program and keep it on track. Teachers show a video at the beginning of each week at their convenience. They then can incorporate the subject matter into their classrooms however they want. The students have seen five of the video segments in addition to my initial in-house program introduction. This concludes the academic part of the first phase of the program.

Next, we will meet for a lab session. We will review all the main concepts and get some hands-on time with the equipment the first half of the lab. The second half will be brainstorming and problem solving with the power wheels vehicle. The basic rover should be up and running before Thanksgiving break.

Thanks again to District 7 leadership Principal Vince for making this possible.

The second pic shows the command view with ADI, altitude speed, heading and waypoint nav information. The ADI is live so it would show pitch and roll if there was any there. Also, the first person view camera can be projected behind the ADI symbology showing what the rover sees with horizon and flight info superimposed. It is also possible to use two monitors and isolate the Camera/Symbology to one heads up driving screen and one Nav/Map support screen. Is this cool or what?!
