Meet Tandra Taylor! Born and raised in East St. Louis. Tandra is an African American History professor who shared with us during an interview how East St. Louis was a safety net for her while growing up there but the media portrayed it otherwise. She also shared how as a college student in Atlanta, many got shocked when she told them she was from East St. Louis and how that caused her to realize how others viewed her beloved town. She like many other locals in East St. Louis are hopeful that it will regain its potential to be the amazing place filled with opportunities it once was.

Meet Darryl Cherry! Born and raised in East St. Louis. He attended East St. Louis High school and recalls using basketball as a means of escape which he played with his friends. He notes that sports is a way in which young people can stay out of a life of crime. He hopes that people would stop making negative comments about East St. Louis and try to find solutions. He commended the efforts of the social service organizations in the community and hopes that in the future there will be better resources channeled towards educational opportunities for black Americans in the community as there is currently inequity and imbalance in the chances available.

Darryl has worked with the SIUE East St. Louis center and hopes that they will be able to assist with the aforementioned challenges in the community. He knows the value of education in empowering the youths for the future. He is also the director and coordinator of Foster Care Adoption for the children’s Home and Aide Society of Illinois.
