IN THE NEWS: CBS Colorado visited Cordillera yesterday to spotlight how technology is being used for wildfire mitigation in our community. Check it out here to see the robo-mower in action and to hear Cordillera Metro District General Manager Trevor Broersma explain how this technology and others help improve our community's wildfire preparedness and response:

The autonomous mowing robot mower is being used in Colorado's high country in rough areas where people generally aren't able to do mowing work.

IN THE NEWS: Cordillera Metro District is again in the news today with Denver-based The Colorado Sun’s publication of an article focused on our innovative wildfire mitigation strategy. This news has arrived on the same day as our first box of wildfire smoke-detecting sensors from Dryad Networks! Read the full article here: https://coloradosun.com/2026/04/09/colorado-wildfires-cordillera-firefighting-methods/ | Photo: Cordillera Metro District’s Jim Rabun deploys a tank-tracked robo-mower that can cut brush up to 1.5 inches thick, up 50-degree slopes, to create fire breaks, on April 7, 2026. (Michael Booth, The Colorado Sun) | Highlights:

• Everyone wants to operate the slope-chewing robo-mower. But what Broersma and county officials are most enthusiastic about this month is the arrival of the thousand smoke and particle detectors from Dryad Networks, a German company. Cordillera, with about 700 residents, will be the second community in the nation to install them as general fire detection, after a vulnerable Florida neighborhood.

• “I have full confidence it will prove out, and then hopefully we can work together to figure out how to get them all around the county,” said Broersma, who lives across the highway from Cordillera in a different metro district.

• Cordillera’s goal is to mow 25 miles of fire breaks that can slow flames and maintain the community’s defensible space. Mowing the breaks not only deprives wildfires of fuel, it also opens up terrain for drones or helicopters to drop retardant to further fortify the defense. Dropping retardant on fully grown brush provides only about 30% resistance, Broersma said, while dropping it on more receptive mowed terrain boosts the protection to about 80%.

• Installing about 1,000 solar-powered smoke sensors will be a team effort beginning in April and running through summer. It’s also a rolling experiment, as the staff works with Eagle Valley Wildland to adjust the optimum placement.
