A big thank you to everyone who donated books to the Edmonds School District during the Beloved Community Event, and to the Edmonds Bookshop who matched donations 1-2! Your contributions have helped in the goal that all kids can see themselves in books and learn from others stories, as well as be inspired by leaders big and small!

Getting ready for our first school-based showing of Black Girl in Suburbia! Congratulations to Edmonds Heights K12 for kicking off these discussions in their Equity Team and community.

S3 has prepared targeted questions and handouts for this school’s participants, and will be engaged in a follow-up discussion that better fit this school’s scheduling.

We had a great group out tonight, watching Black Girl in Suburbia at an event hosted by the Edmonds Neighborhood Action Coalition. It’s always exciting to see people who feel like their experience was reflected perfectly—and people who feel like they had no idea their neighbors were having these experiences. Thank you to all our participants for their willingness to learn and share!

Thank you to everyone who came out for Black Girl in Suburbia last night to chat with 240 strangers about race, identity and equity! Melissa Lowery’s Black Girl in Suburbia is a story of self that raises awareness and promotes conversation. Raised in an Oregon suburb as one of only a few minorities, Lowery’s film centers her own experience—and that of her daughters, which is not so different from her own.

This film screening and moderated discussion with the filmmaker is sponsored by the Edmonds School District and Edmonds Diversity Commission.
