This month we would like to raise awareness about one of the dangers that intact community cats face.
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)
FIV is spread primarily by bite wounds from an infected cat.
-Intact males instinctively fighting other males for the right to reproduce
-Intact males biting females as part of the mating ritual
-Territorial fighting with deep bite wounds
-Also occasionally passed from mother to kittens
Cats become infected with FIV because of human failure! Human fails to spay and neuter, cat is allowed outside, cat follows its instincts, cat becomes infected with FIV, the intact cat continues to fight/bite and continues to spread the FIV…. Preventable! Human Failure!
Spaying and neutering the community cats stops most of the behaviors that lead to exposure..
LET’S MEET FINN!
This gorgeous gigantic fella was a newcomer spotted at a colony we had been trapping. We trapped him for TNR, and noticed he was actually friendly. We scanned him for a microchip, and posted him online searching for his owner, but no one ever came forward. Routine pre-adoption lab work revealed that Finn has FIV. Finn has FIV because a human failed to neuter him. Finn has since been neutered and adopted, and has a wonderful loving family. So far he’s healthy, but FIV cats are immunocompromised, so minor infections can lead to major infections for them.
This June we will FIX FOR FINN!
Every cat we TNR is healthier after being fixed and vaccinated. Their potential for exposure to FIV is also decreased exponentially after omitting the breeding behaviors
$50 will sponsor one cat this month, but every penny adds up and we are grateful for any size donation! Everything we do is made possible by donors like you, thank you! Can you please help us FIX FOR FINN?!?
