Volunteer Opportunity!
We will have a litter pickup event at the state park’s day-use area on May 20. This is to get the day-use area cleaned up prior to the busy Memorial Day weekend. The event will start at 10:00, and we will meet at shelter one which is the shelter closest to the park entrance.

Participants should wear closed-toe shoes and appropriate work clothes for the weather. If you have a pick-stick and bucket, please bring them. A few pick-sticks and buckets will be available if you need them. Also bring work gloves, water and insect repellant if needed. Please email me at [email protected] if you plan to attend.

About a dozen Frespace members joined Edisto Beach State Park ranger Damion to install sand fence along the dune line toward Jeremy inlet. Between 10:00 and 1:00 these volunteers installed 31 new sections of fence, a new record for fence installation in a single morning.

As amazing as this crew was, they did not quite finish. Two more Frespace members joined ranger Ben to finish the last 7 sections several days later. From start to finish, Frespace contributed approximately 80 hours of labor for this project.

These sand fence sections perform a critical function in helping preserve the fragile dune environment between the state park campground and Jeremy inlet.

In addition to providing the labor for this project the materials used were funded by members’ annual membership dues and donations.
For more information on Frespace and to join go to www.frespace.org. Donations can be mailed to Frespace; P.O. Box 523; Edisto Island, SC 29438.

Volunteers wanted April 9th

FRESPACE Members, we have a great opportunity to spend some time on the beach and assist the Edisto Beach State Park staff installing sand fence. This fence will trap blowing sand to create new dunes. Previously installed fencing is proving to be an effective tool for dune restoration and protection from high tides and storms.

This will be a social event as much as a work detail, allowing volunteers to meet fellow FRESPACE members and get to know park staff. Interested individuals should be able to do moderate physical activity. Closed toe shoes, weather appropriate work clothes, and gloves are recommended.

This project will take place Thursday April 9 at 10:00 am weather permitting. We will meet at the big white building in the day use area of the state park. If the project is not completed Thursday, we will reconvene Friday, April 10 to finish up.

If you can help, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator, Ron Steele, by email [email protected].
