From Neglect to Protector Meet K9 Vex

On August 18 2025 a Belgian Malinois was found in Craven County tethered without food water or shelter. That dog is now known as Vex.

After a cruelty conviction and rescue Vex was evaluated and something stood out drive resilience and heart. Today Vex is a K9 Deputy training with Deputy Barnett preparing to serve the same community where he was once neglected.

This is what a second chance can become.

Working dogs are more than partners. Whether in law enforcement search and rescue or service roles they stand the line for us every day. They protect guide comfort and save lives.

K9 Vex is one of them.

Some heroes are made. Others are rescued.

When a police officer was critically injured in a shooting, his K-9 partner, Rex, refused to leave his side. Despite being trained for action, Rex stayed by the officer’s hospital room, pacing and whimpering, unable to eat or rest.

A week later, Rex was brought to visit his partner. The moment he entered the room, he went straight to the officer’s bed, gently laying his head on his chest and licking his face. The officer, overwhelmed, whispered, “I missed you too, buddy. You’re my hero.”

Rex’s unwavering loyalty and emotional intelligence highlighted the deep, unconditional bond between a dog and his handler, proving that sometimes, the strongest heroes are not human.
