OCA-New Jersey "Embracing the Hopes and Aspirations of Asian Pacific Americans"

OCA’s PRIMARY OBJECTIVES

Promoting active participation of Asian Pacific Americans in both civic and national matters; securing the social justice, equal opportunity and equal treatment of Asian Pacific Americans; eliminating prejudices, stereotypes and ignorance of Asian Pacific Americans, and; promoting the cultural heritage of Chinese and Asian Pacific Americans. To achieve these objectives, OCA is engaged in networking with its 82 chapters and affiliates across the country to develop leadership and community involvement. The chapters and organizational and college affiliates are establishing strong local programs in all parts of the country. Founded in 1973 as the Organization of Chinese Americans; OCA’s goal is to ensure the civil rights of the Asian Pacific American community. OCA is the first national Asian Pacific American organization to establish headquarters in Washington, D.C. OCA has been successful in building national support and working in coalition with other national groups around issues affecting Asian Americans.

OCA-NJ hosted again our 4- Chapters annual picnic at Van Saun County Park on Sunday, October 4. Despite the possibility of rain, 40 members and friends from OCA-NJ, OCA-NY, OCA-WHV, and OCA-LI came together to enjoy a wonderful afternoon filled with fun, friendship, and camaraderie.
One of the highlights of the picnic was a special presentation by Dr. Kit Cheung, educator, author, and researcher known for her work on classical Mahjong, who shared the history of Mahjong and taught our members how to play the game. Tables were set up for everyone to practice and enjoy Mahjong together, and many members had a great time learning, playing, and socializing.

We were also honored to have the Bergen County Commissioner Mary Amoroso stop by to greet our group and welcome us to Bergen County. Ludi Hughes, Bergen County Community Relations Specialist and last year’s OCA-NJ Holiday Ball Honoree, was also there and reminded everyone about the importance of participating in the upcoming fall election.

Overall, our annual picnic was a huge success. It was a wonderful opportunity for our members and friends to relax, connect, and enjoy each other’s company. The laughter, friendship, and camaraderie made the day truly special, and we look forward to another memorable picnic next year!

The public commemoration of Pvt. Danny Chen's death will take place on Sat., October 3rd at the street sign, Pvt. Danny Chen Way, at 11:00 a.m. -11:30 a.m. You are also welcome to attend the commemoration and give brief remarks (no more than 2 minutes please). The exhibit will be open to the public beginning on Sat., October 3rd (immediately following the commemoration at Pvt. Danny Chen Way) through Sat., October 10th, from noon-5 p.m. Please see below exhibit flyer and commemoration flyer.

OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates is excited to announce the launch of the Joe and Loanne Chiu Scholarship! This award supports first-generation undergraduate students, who often face unique barriers in their pursuit of higher education, to help them overcome these challenges and thrive in college.

What to Know:
$5,000 will be awarded to one current high school senior who will be a first-generation college student entering their first year of undergrad in Fall 2026.
Scholarship recipients will be required to complete one report per year during their undergraduate studies providing updates on their academic progress. Reports will be submitted via a form provided by OCA.

Deadline to Apply: May 22, 2026
