School starts Tuesday, and Highland Park mornings and afternoons are about to look very different.

If you have a child heading back to class, you are probably somewhere between excited and not quite ready. We get it. Our officers have kids in schools too.

You will see us near the schools at drop off and dismissal, keeping traffic moving and getting students safely from the curb to the door. How many officers we can put out there will vary with staffing and calls for service. The standard does not vary. Every child in this borough gets home safe.

Here is how you can help:

Leave early. A few extra minutes at home beats a rushed drive.

Obey our crossing guards. They have earned your patience.

Stop for school buses with their reds on. Every time.

Expect backups around the schools. If you are not picking up or dropping off, take another route.

Thank you to our crossing guards, school staff, and bus drivers. They set the tone for every school day in our community.

We will see you out there. Be patient with each other and let's start the year off right. 🚓

The Traffic Safety Division is hosting several upcoming community roadway safety assessments in four areas of the township, with the first being next Tuesday, September 8, on Mitchell Avenue! Please join us to engage in two-way communication with Traffic Safety Officers to share neighborhood specific traffic safety concerns and utilize handheld radar devices to view speeding levels firsthand.

Free campaign lawn signs will be available at all events. The goal of these events is to enhance future traffic safety campaigns by incorporating feedback provided by residents. Stay tuned for upcoming assessments!

With school back in session, motorists can expect an increase in pedestrian traffic throughout South River. Please use extra caution, especially during the hours when children are walking to and from school. Remember, all streets surrounding our schools, and most streets throughout South River, have a 25 MPH speed limit.

For the first few days of school, we’ll have additional officers near the schools during arrival and dismissal. Our normal presence will continue throughout the rest of the school year.

Let’s work together to keep our students safe. We wish all of our students, teachers, and staff a safe and successful first day of school!

The Monroe Township Police Department Traffic Safety Division is investigating a serious motor vehicle crash
that occurred during the early morning hours of Sunday, August 30, 2026.

At approximately 4:28 a.m., officers responded to Route 33 in the area between Applegarth Road and Perrineville Road for a report of a single-vehicle crash. The preliminary investigation determined that the vehicle was traveling eastbound on Route 33 before leaving the roadway and ultimately striking a utility pole on the westbound side of the highway.

The driver, a female resident of Trenton, New Jersey, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported
to an area hospital for treatment.

Investigators believe that additional motorists were traveling on Route 33 at the time of the crash and may have witnessed the incident or circumstances immediately preceding it.

The Monroe Township Police Department Traffic Safety Division is asking anyone who witnessed the crash,
was traveling on Route 33 in the area of Applegarth Road and Perrineville Road at approximately 4:28 a.m. or may have information relevant to the investigation to contact Officer Taylor Deickmann at 732-521-0222, extension 248.

The crash remains under investigation by the Monroe Township Police Department Traffic Safety Division.
