Hey y'all! So excited for our next book club meeting! If you haven't started our next title, you still have nine days to read.

For our August meeting, we will be discussing The Lesbiana's Guide to Catholic School by Sonora Reyes. Published in 2022, the book focuses on Yamilet Flores- a young Mexican-American teenager grappling with coming out as a le***an while attending a conservative, mostly-white Catholic School in Phoenix, Arizona. This heartwarming YA novel deals with themes of identity, chosen family, and coming out while also dealing with characters and communities at the intersection of race, class, and immigration.

We have FREE copies available at Love Letter Coffee in McAllen (just tell them you are picking up the book from Pride y Paginas). We have also coordinated drop offs in the lower Valley. If you need a copy, let us know and we will try our best to get you one before next Friday.

We will be meeting at Altaer- a queer-owned space in Brownsville focused on community healing. We'll have cafe de olla and pan dulce for the occasion.

Happy International Nonbinary People’s Day!!!!

Nonbinary people are diverse, creative, dynamic, and an important part of the LGBTQ+ community in the Rio Grande Valley and everywhere.

People who transcend the gender binary have existed for thousands of years across different cultures and communities. Cultures around the world have historically recognized more than two genders. Even in less accepting environments, people whose gender defies easy categorization have always found ways to exist as themselves. Nonbinary people have been an important part of many trans and other LGBTQ+ movements.

There is no one way to be nonbinary. Nonbinary people can come out at any age, and be of any race or size or gender assigned at birth. Some nonbinary people present in androgynous ways, as femme or masc, in ways that combine it all, or fluid presentations that change from day to day.

Nonbinary people are valid and we do not need any kind of recognition to exist as who we say we are.

As The South Texas Equality Project, we are so proud that half of our leadership board is nonbinary and of all of the nonbinary volunteers that make our work possible.
