Fun Fact Friday 🐝
Did you know? Even as outdoor temperatures fluctuate in early spring, honey bees carefully regulate the temperature inside their hive. Worker bees generate heat by vibrating their flight muscles, maintaining the brood nest at approximately 93–95°F — the optimal temperature for developing larvae.

If the colony becomes too warm, bees shift roles and help cool the hive by fanning their wings to circulate air. This precise temperature control is critical for healthy brood development and overall colony survival.

As we welcome the first day of spring, honey bee colonies are already hard at work maintaining a stable, carefully controlled environment — regardless of what the weather in Pennsylvania decides to do.

🐝 Fun Fact Friday 🐝

Did you know honey bees don’t just find flowers… they give each other directions using a dance?

It’s called the waggle dance, and it’s how bees communicate the exact location of nectar and pollen sources to their hive mates. The direction of the dance tells other bees which way to fly in relation to the sun and the length of the “waggle” tells them how far away the flowers are.

So the next time you see a bee visiting blooms, just know—she might be heading out thanks to some very precise dance instructions back at the hive.
