Edgewater, New Jersey:
This is the time of year that PSE&G removes the Monk Parakeet nests from the utility poles. They have chosen to not work with the Edgewater Parrots Society anymore. Instead, they have chosen to take matters into their own hands.
For this reason, I'm asking everyone to be very vigilant watching any Monk Parakeet nests that may be near you. Keep your phones, cameras, and/or your video cameras handy and please record any interaction, nest removal, or activity you come across that involves the utility company and the Monk Parakeet nests.
In une 2017, when they did this themselves, they removed 27 baby birds and brought them to the sanctuary at the end of the day. 6 of them were DEAD!
Therefore, we must police the area ourselves and protect these birds. If you see anything unusual, please don't hesitate to reach out to me!
They have been trained to tap the poles with a heavy object to evacuate the nest prior to any removal. They're supposed to dismantle nests from the top to the bottom to prevent any eggs or babies that may remain in the nest from falling to the ground. This is the established protocol for over 10 years, and PSE&G claims that they have trained all of their employees how to remove nests in this fashion.
Again, keep your phones, cameras, and video cameras with you at all times and tape any activity you come across. Thank you in advance.
