Blessed Lughnasadh!
🌻👩🏽🌾In August when the sun reaches 15 degrees of Leo, we celebrate Lughnasadh, the first of three harvest celebrations in the Wheel of the Year. The calendar date celebration of August 1st was likely set in the early 1500’s as presently 15° Leo occurs around August 8th due to precession of the equinoxes Sun’s position rate of shift of 1° in about 72 years.
🌞🌱Halfway between Litha the summer solstice and Mabon the fall equinox, ancestral communities marked the first fruiting of the season with the gathering of grains. The first sheaves would not be cut nor the first loaves baked from this harvest until this period, also known as Lammas “loaf mass” of Lammastide.
🌾🍞This is a time to reap what we have sown, honoring the spirits of the land, our homes, and our ancestors. It is a moment to share, to gather, to drink and eat a feast of grains and berries. A time to work and play, to give thanks for the bounty and blessings of our harvest and to celebrate our skills and talents. To soak in the Sun at its height, and to scythe and sacrifice now to sustain us for the future.
🫐🍒Reflect with gratitude on the fruits of your labors, in the honing of your skills and acknowledging the spirits of your connections to the land and your lineage. What needs to be cut as you and your year moves forward? How will you harvest who you are becoming? Combine gratitude, reflection and purposeful action as you connect with the spirit of the season.
