The ocean didn’t care that he was only 13.
What started as a normal day on the water in Western Australia quickly turned into a nightmare. Strong currents dragged Austin Appelbee, his mother, and his two younger siblings farther and farther from shore.
No signal. No help. Just miles of open sea.
In that moment, Austin made a decision most adults would struggle to make, he would swim for help.
He tried to hold onto an inflatable kayak at first, but when it began to fail, he let it go. Then he swam. And kept swimming. For four hours. Through rough, unforgiving water. Fighting exhaustion with every stroke.
At one point, even his life jacket became a burden so he took it off and pushed forward.
Four kilometers later, he reached the shore… collapsed… and still found the strength to raise the alarm.
Because of that decision, a rescue helicopter was able to locate his family nearly 14 kilometers offshore, alive.
People are calling his effort “superhuman.”
But maybe it’s something else.
Maybe it’s what courage looks like when responsibility meets love.
What stands out to you most about Austin’s story?
