📚 Welcome back to school!

☀️ We want to welcome all students back to school! We know some of you started last week and the rest have started this week.

🌿 We can't wait to see you in the gardens this fall with all the beautiful produce that's been growing over the summer. We have exciting news recipes to try and fun garden activities to explore.

🎉 Last week, our 17 high school interns finished their program!

👩‍🌾 These students worked hard across the city at their high schools for the past 2 and a half months. Some of them brought gardens back to life, some of them came up with new ideas for established gardens, and all of them learned skills we know they'll bring into their adult lives.

🍅 Not only did they work hard in their gardens, but they connected with their communities at the weekly Huerta Urbana farmer's market. There, they were able to see firsthand why we grow food in the communities that take it home.

🌿 They also learned about green career pathways as they visited nearby organizations and local colleges. They saw how a career choice can benefit not only the person doing the job, but the people that job serves.

🌐 We taught them job skills they can take with them into the future as they continue high school and start thinking about the careers they want to pursue post grad.

💙 This group of students was phenomenal, and we are so proud of them and everything they accomplished this summer.

☀️ Meet one of our new schools, North High School!

is the home of some of our fantastic high school interns. This summer, students from North completely brought the garden back to life. They spent long hours seeding, weeding, watering, and harvesting to get the garden where it is now: beautiful and bountiful! We can't wait for the school to come back and see all the hard work their students and classmates put into their garden.

☀️ Last weekend, we tabled at the Montbello Back to School Health and Wellness Fair.

📚 It was wonderful to see students before the school year starts. Some remembered us from programming, while others are excited to see us for programming for the first time!

Over the summer, we have the privilege to see students from the Seed 2 Seed program at 🪴

This summer, they visited the garden at where the high school interns taking care of that site explained the work they had been doing and the produce they were growing. Seed 2 Seed then got their hands dirty pulling weeds, adding mulch, planting, harvesting, and completing other projects around the garden!

They came back a month later to see how all their hard work helped the garden and the student interns. They were able to harvest produce and stock a nearby while talking about food insecurity and mutual aid. They also learned where free community fridges are around the city that they can utilize or stock whenever they can!

We're so thankful for the continued work we get to do with year after year, giving these students a look into what SEF is doing for the community.

🌼 Through October, we're here almost every Friday. You will meet students who have been working hard in their school gardens to get this amazing produce into your hands. This market gives them real-world job skills as they connect with community members.

☀️ This market is a pay-what-you-can market, ensuring people from all over the community have access to fresh produce and goods. We love partnering with Focus Points Family Resource Center, and helping our mission of food security across the city.
