This past weekend, the Naptown Jazz Kids Invitational Jazz Festival brought an incredible day of music-making to the campus of University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).
We hosted 13 outstanding ensembles representing public schools, private schools, and community programs, all converging for a full day of morning and afternoon performances. Each group received meaningful adjudications and clinic feedback designed to support growth in improvisation, ensemble playing, and the language of American jazz.
The afternoon sessions expanded the experience even further, featuring workshops with the UMBC Jazz faculty along with section-specific masterclasses led by the US Army Blues—an inspiring opportunity for students to learn directly from active professional musicians.
The day concluded with a powerful evening performance by the US Army Blues, bringing the entire community together to celebrate the depth and vitality of jazz.
We are deeply grateful to the directors, students, families, volunteers, adjudicators, clinicians, and the US Army Blues for their time, energy, and commitment. Over the years, many directors have shared that this remains one of the most impactful festival experiences they’ve attended.
A full day of immersion in improvisational American music—this is jazz education at its finest. Naptown Jazz Kids continues to deliver something truly special.
