North Point - Edgemere Volunteer Fire Department The North Point- Edgemere VFD is committed to providing quality public safety services to the citizens of Southeastern Baltimore County.

The North Point- Edgemere VFD was organized on March 15, 1935 by a group of 15 citizens to protect the North Point Peninsula. The first station was located at 7103 North Point Road in a single door garage. The original area protected was 20 sq. miles and served 6,000 families. The first piece of apparatus was a 1914 American LaFrance that was purchased from Baltimore County. Our original firefighter training was given by firefighters from the Dundalk fire station. The first new engine purchased was a 1947 Auto Car. In 1952 the station was moved to its current location at 7500 North Point Road. This new location offered a new building that was bigger and gave us room to expand. In 1956 a 1952 White Rescue Truck was acquired from the Baltimore Salvage Corps which began the rescue business for the company. We became a two engine company in 1964 with the purchase of a 1964 International engine. In 1980 the company began water rescue service with the purchase of a 16’ Star Craft boat. In 2000, the station was completely rebuilt and now occupies 20,000 sq. feet of equipment bays, offices and a rental hall. The services provided to the community out of this location consist of firefighting, emergency medical services, heavy rescue, marine firefighting and rescue. We average approximately 650-700 calls for service each year and remain all volunteer.

The Flag of Heroes

In nearly every single firehouse in the country, there is some sort of remembrance of September 11th. Some have newspapers framed. Some have a list of names. Some even have a piece of the World Trade Center in a memorial area inside or outside of the station. In many houses like ours, the Flag of Heroes hangs prominently.

The flag may be easy to overlook on day to day operations, and its impact may not be felt as strongly among younger and newer firefighters as years go by, but we cannot forget its significance.

The flag contains the names of first responders killed in the line of duty that day. A total of 404 names.

343 New York firefighters
37 Port Authority police officers
23 New York police officers
1 New York fire patrolman

But the flag contains more than names, it holds stories.

Captain Mike Warchola, Ladder 5, who was two days from his last tour before retiring on 9/13.

Officer John Perry, NYPD, was also soon to retire. He was filing his paperwork at headquarters when the attacks happened.

Battalion Chief 7 Orio Palmer and Fire Marshal Ronald Bucca, both avid runners, who climbed to the 78th floor of the South Tower. The only two responders to reach an impact zone.

Fire Patrolman Kieth Roma, the only member of the fire patrol to be killed that day. Working side by side with other firefighters, patrolmen would work to salvage and prevent excess damage to property during fires. He ascended the North Tower with other crews.

Chief Peter Ganci, the Chief of the FDNY. Although high level chiefs primarily work at a desk and do not respond to fire calls, he responded to the attacks and personally led recovery efforts after the first collapse, killed when the South Tower came down.

Firefighter Daniel Suhr, Engine 216, was the first FDNY member killed. He lost his life when struck by a falling body.

Firefighter Carl Bini, Rescue 5, and Firefighter Robert Curatola, Ladder 16, who were off duty and responded anyway. Curatola was married just weeks earlier.

Firefighter Gary Box and Firefighter Stephen Siller, Squad 1. When the Squad encountered impassable gridlocked traffic during the response, they and fellow members got out and ran from the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center, roughly 3 miles in full gear with tools. None of Squad 1 survived. The Tunnel to Towers foundation is in their honor.

Detective Joseph Vigiano, NYPD, and Firefighter John Vigiano Jr, Ladder 132, were brothers. Both were killed when the towers collapsed.

Captain Kathy Mazza, PAPD, was a nurse prior to becoming a police officer, and helped treat and evacuate many injured persons.

14 FDNY companies, Rescues 1, 3, 4, Engines 33, 54, Ladders 3, 4, 7, 105, 101, 118, Squads 1, 288, Haz-Mat 1, who lost all of their responding members, accounting for almost a third of the FDNY casualties.

Countless more stories that should be told. Each name holds a unique story of a life cut tragically short. A parent, child, or sibling who never came back. Every one answered the call, knowing the dangers, but committed and resolved to do their work and save lives.

Today we commemorate their sacrifice, but every day we come to the station and walk past the flag, we remember them. We read their names. We know their story.

Never Forget means Always Remember.

Please see a message from our President:

Effective immediately, students will no longer be permitted to park in the firehouse rear parking lot.
This decision was not made lightly. Previous incidents involving irresponsible decisions, failure to follow established rules, and a lack of appropriate supervision have created concerns regarding safety, accountability, and the ability to maintain the lot for its intended purpose. When established rules are repeatedly disregarded, we must take action to protect our members, emergency operations, and the surrounding community.

We understand that this change may be inconvenient for students and their families. However, use of the firehouse parking lot is a privilege, not a guaranteed parking arrangement.
The gravel lot located between the firehouse and Food Lion remains available for student parking.
We appreciate the cooperation and understanding of the school community as we make this change. Our priority will always be maintaining a safe and secure environment for our members and the community we serve.

We would also like to remind everyone that the driveway directly in front of the firehouse garage doors is not to be used for student drop-off or pickup. Vehicles parked or stopped in this area may obstruct emergency apparatus and delay our ability to respond to an emergency. Keeping the firehouse access clear is essential to our department's mission and must remain a priority at all times.

We thank everyone for their cooperation and for helping us keep our emergency response operations safe and unobstructed.
