Simon roams the property and helps keep populations of rodents and other unwanted pests in check. On a working farm, managing these animals naturally can help protect crops, stored food, and other farm resources.

Of course, Simon also spends plenty of time doing important cat business—exploring, napping, and keeping an eye on everything happening around the farm. Lots of napping.

Stewarding a garden means making space for more than just the plants we grow. A healthy garden is a busy one—and not everything in it is something we planted.

This tiny woolly bear caterpillar and monarch chrysalis are two examples of the many creatures that make their homes in and around our gardens. Insects and other wildlife play important roles in a healthy ecosystem—from pollinating plants to breaking down organic matter and providing food for other animals.

Pigs use their strong sense of smell and sensitive noses to root through soil, vegetation, and other materials in search of food. Their natural rooting behavior can also help turn over soil and make use of areas that might otherwise go to waste.

Pigs are a useful part of a diversified farm because they can convert a wide variety of foods into nutrient-dense meat. When raised on pasture and given room to forage, they also bring natural behaviors like rooting, exploring, and grazing into the farm system.

This little one looks like they’ve been putting that nose to good use.

Harvesting sweet potatoes takes some digging. Unlike many of our crops, sweet potatoes develop underground and spread outward from the original plant. Our garden crew has to carefully dig through the soil to find and lift the tubers without damaging them.

This is one of the more labor-intensive harvests in the garden, but the reward is a full row of sweet potatoes ready for the kitchen of our community food equity partners.

At our September Community Craft Night, we explored the art of papermaking using natural materials like turkey tail mushrooms, iris leaves and stems, onion tops, sunflowers, and corn husks.Participants added dried flowers and seeds to create their own one-of-a-kind sheets of paper while learning how to give garden waste a second life as the seasons change.

Check out our October Community Craft Night: Paper Arts on October 15th! Spots still available on our website.

Marigolds are doing more than adding a little color to our garden this fall. 🌼
Each year, we plant low-growing marigolds between our tomato plants. The two crops grow well together, and marigolds can help deter certain garden pests, including some aphids, whiteflies, thrips, and root-knot nematodes.

Now that the tomatoes have finished producing, we’re removing the exhausted plants and letting the marigolds continue to thrive.

They’ll stay bright and golden in the garden until the first hard frost, giving us a beautiful reminder that even the end of a growing season has its own kind of abundance.
