Close the bar” wasn’t always just a saying—it was once a literal part of tavern life. 🍻 In the 17th century, taverns often used wooden barriers, gates, and even cage-like bar structures to protect liquor and money from patrons after hours.

Now, that history is being brought back to life at the Vincent House Museum as part of Independence on Martha’s Vineyard: Then, Now & Forever, an immersive MA250 exhibition exploring how independence has shaped the Island over the past 250 years. 🌊⚓️

These behind-the-scenes moments capture local craftsman Mike MacKenty building a traditional cage bar for the exhibit’s tavern room—a full-circle moment for a family deeply connected to the preservation of the Vincent House itself.

In 1977, the MacKenty family donated the home and helped move it to its current location. Nearly 50 years later, that legacy continues inside its walls. 🏡

There will be an exhibit preview on Memorial Day (May 25th, 2026), followed by regular hours Tuesdays–Saturdays starting July 4th Weekend.

This exhibit is made possible by the Martha’s Vineyard Community Foundation and the Mass Cultural Council.
