Earlier this week, the Katama Airfield Trustees, commissioners, staff and close friends gathered for an intimate ceremony to dedicate a permanent bench at the new hangar in honor of Captain Robert “Bob” Stone and his good friend Rob Wilkinson.

For over 20 years, Bob served as Chairman of the Katama Airfield Trust and Chairman of the Airfield Commission, pouring his heart into the airfield he loved. His infamous glider and glider rides were well known to the Airfield community. He worked tirelessly with the town advocating for the new hangar and we’re grateful he lived to see it completed.

This bench, placed in front of the office, stands as a lasting tribute to Bob’s dedication and to the legacy carried forward by the current trustees who helped bring the new hangar to life.

Bob’s widow, Bess Stone, had the honor of unveiling the bench.

Thank you, Bob, for everything you gave to Katama Airfield. Your spirit will always have a home here.

A fresh look for Katama’s new hangar! ✈️

This year, our trustees advocated for the town to support painting the interior and floor of the new hangar. Katama Airfield Trust gifted the town a large portion of the total painting cost, helping make the improvements pictured here possible.

Meet David Halsey an orthopedic surgeon, Chief Clinical Officer, pilot, and trustee of the Katama Airfield Trust.

David was first introduced to both medicine and community service through the Boy Scouts while growing up in Monmouth County, New Jersey. After becoming the nation’s youngest EMT while attending Deerfield Academy and later serving as a firefighter and paramedic at Middlebury College, he earned his medical degree from the University of Vermont and began his career as an orthopedic surgeon.

Today, David serves as Chief Clinical Officer for a chronic condition management company, consults with the Department of Orthopedics at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, and serves the Island community through concierge “Orthopaedic Navigation.”

An instrument-rated private pilot, David flies his Cirrus 22T G6 from Martha’s Vineyard Airport (KMVY) in partnership with Patrick Bradley.

At Katama, David mentors young aviators through the EAA Young Eagles Program, helping inspire the next generation of pilots.

Beyond aviation and medicine, David volunteers as Flotilla Commander for the USCG Auxiliary Station Menemsha. He is also an accomplished mariner, avid saltwater fisherman, and certified pickleball teaching professional. David and his wife, Katie, live in Edgartown year-round.

Leave Your Mark at Katama Airfield!

For generations, Katama Airfield has been kept alive by people who showed up — as volunteer commissioners, as hands-on helpers, and as donors who believed the field was worth protecting.

Now there’s a way to make that legacy permanent.

The Katama Airfield Trust has a Donor Recognition Walkway around our new hangar as a lasting tribute to everyone who has given their time, energy, and support to the work of the Katama Airfield Trust and to help keep this historic airfield beautiful. Each stone will bear a name, a family, or a memory, set in the ground for decades of visitors, pilots, and neighbors to see.

Reserve your stone and become a permanent part of Katama Airfield’s story with the link: https://katamaairfieldtrust.org/donate-2/

Happy holidays from KAT! We’re so grateful to our supporters for helping us maintain the grounds and historic buildings of the airfield, keeping it welcoming and accessible for pilots, visitors, and the whole community.

It’s been an incredible 2025, from our first opening day with a fully operational new hangar (!) to another highly successful Young Eagles Rally providing free flights to local island youth.

Looking ahead, we’ll be creating a historical timeline outside the hangar honoring the airfield’s rich story, and working to expand aviation education and training for all ages on the island.

If you’re interesting in learning more and supporting our work, please visit the link below. Every gift, no matter the size, helps us keep the spirit of flight alive here on the Island.
