There are many litter warriors across our great nation, cleaning up public places one piece of trash at a time. How wonderful that they—and you—are out there. How sad that it is necessary.

Alan Wile became quite the fixture at a Virginia park, known for his dog treats, but more so for cleaning up the park.

What a great story—and great effort by a single individual. But we can all be like her.

This coming Saturday, September 21, there will be a litter cleanup throughout the county in advance of the Chowan County Regional Fair. Let’s all spend a few minutes to make our community litter-free, so we can see the natural beauty around us rather than the litter thrown along our roadways.

The Interchange Angels program is looking for organizations to ā€œadoptā€ several Route 17 interchanges, to clean them up before major events in town. Let us know if your group is interested and we’ll supply all your needs—orange vests, gloves, grabbers, trash bags. With 6-8 people working, it genuinely takes an hour or so of your time.

Attention CSC member:
The Chowan Senior Center Greens will be participating in this event. CSC Greens will do a litter sweep on Paradise Road starting at the overpass. Come join the group and help keep America and Chowan County beautiful.
For more information please call 252-482-2242.

Erik picked up this strand of ELEVEN balloons out of the hayfield this afternoon. They were losing helium and would have been essentially invisible in another few hours, and then stood a good chance of getting mowed, raked and baled in the dense grass to be potentially eaten by a cow, horse or goat this winter. This is often fatal to the animal, causing intestinal blockage or choking. With the long strings wound right into the bale, an animal may not even realize what it’s consuming until it’s too late.

Please, on behalf of not only livestock but wildlife, skip the balloons when you’re decorating for your party this summer! Releasing balloons, whether accidental or intentional, is littering, plain and simple—and it can truly have deadly consequences.

For our readers who want receipts, here a few articles about the effect of balloons on both livestock and wildlife:

Think throwing something out you window is no big deal? Think again…litter ends up in our creeks, rivers, and Albemarle Sound, harming our wildlife. (Fortunately, this did not happen here…but it could. 😢)

Thanks to the Open Door Church, Lions, and Edenton Lake & Harbor Interchange Angels for picking up litter on the Route 17 bypass interchanges on Saturday in advance of the upcoming bass fishing event. You may be seeing the Refuse Refuse group on Monday cleaning up their interchange (they couldn’t make it on Saturday!) It is great to see so many volunteers keeping our interchanges clean and litter-free, providing a welcoming entrance into our town.

If your group would like to become Interchange Angels, let us know. There are still a few interchanges that are available, including Virginia Road (both sides). Only two more opportunities to participate—before the County Fair and the Christmas parade/festivities.

Remember, ā€œStow it. Don’t throw it.ā€

June 4th is the date of the National Bass Fishing Tournament being held in Edenton. To provide a welcoming introduction to our beautiful town for those coming to the tournament (and related festivities), we’re asking that our Interchange Angels, even though you recently cleaned up litter on the Route 17 bypass interchanges for Easels in the Garden, go back out and do the same on Saturday morning, June 1.

And, if your organization, friends and neighbors want to participate, let us know ow and we’ll provide trash bags, gloves, vests and, if available (we have a limited supply) of grabbers.

Mark your calendars for the remaining 2024 interchange cleanup dates:

—September 21st (before the Chowan County Regional Fair which runs from September 24th through the 28th), and

—December 7th (before for the Christmas Candlelight Tour which tasks place on December 13th and 14th).

As always, we greatly appreciate the commitment of our current Interchange Angels—the Edenton Lion’s Club, Edenton Lake and Harbor Community, the Open Door Church, and Refuse the Refuse groups—to this important community service.

We continue to seek the participation of other groups to address interchanges which are not now being cleaned. If anyone has any leads on organizations that might be interested in participating, please forward this along.

As I know you do, we hope for the day when our efforts will no longer be needed to ensure the continued beauty of Chowan County.

Remind everyone to ā€œStow it. Don’t throw it.ā€
