Dan River Basin Association

Dan River Basin Association Since 2002, we’ve been protecting and promoting the Dan River Basin through recreation, education, and stewardship.

Non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, working in Virginia and North Carolina to protect and promote the Dan River Basin through recreation, education, and stewardship. What started as a small group of citizens concerned about the future of our waterways has grown into a 16-county movement in Virginia and North Carolina dedicated to advocating for a healthy environment, stronger connections to the out

doors, and educating people about the value of conserving our natural resources. From building trails and hosting river cleanups to teaching the next generation of water stewards, DRBA works at the local, state, and national level to protect and promote the rivers that connect us. Healthy rivers and clean air aren’t just critical for wildlife; we rely on them for strong economies, public health, and community well-being. Check out the link in our bio to learn more, donate, volunteer, or join us for some fun in nature.

We are ending National Boater Safety Week with what we talked about first- Wear your Lifejacket/PFD at all times!

No matter what adventure you have planned, wear a life jacket on the water. Make sure your life jacket is appropriate for your water activity, and fits properly.

Incidents on the water can happen much too fast to put on a stowed life jacket. U.S. Coast Guard statistics show drowning caused 3 out of every 4 recreational boating fatalities in 2024, and that approximately 87% of those victims were not wearing life jackets.

Life jackets meant for adults do not work for children. Make sure kids wear properly fitted, child-sized life jackets based on their weight. Never buy a life jacket for your child to “grow into.”

🚣‍♀️ Check the manufacturer’s ratings for your size and weight.
🚣‍♀️ Ensure all zips and buckles are properly fastened
🚣‍♀️ Raise your arms above your head. The life jacket should not ride up over your chin or face.
🚣‍♀️ A snug fit with no excess room at the arm openings
