🖤 In Loving Memory of Elara 🖤

This is not an announcement we ever imagined possible and the most difficult we have had to make. It is with shattered hearts that we share the loss of our beloved Elara. 😞

Late Sunday night, we observed sudden neurological changes in Elara and immediately transported her to a 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital for evaluation and care. Despite the team’s best efforts and immediate intervention, we were faced with devastating news regarding the severity of her condition and prognosis.

Surrounded by love, and to prevent further suffering, we made the impossible and compassionate decision to let her go and be at peace.

There are no words adequate for this loss.

Elara was deeply loved and profoundly cherished during her time with us. Though she was only here for a short time, she brought immense joy, hope, connection, and light into our sanctuary family and community.

We are grieving not only her loss, but the future we had begun to imagine with her—a future of growth, education, companionship, and advocacy within the sanctuary and beyond.

At this time, we ask for grace, privacy, and understanding as we navigate this devastating loss. Please know we are deeply grateful for your outpouring of love, support, and compassion, even if we are unable to respond to all your thoughtful messages at the moment. Knowing you are with us in this moment is a comfort.

One of the hardest realities of sanctuary and rescue work is that the animals in our care still depend on us, even when our hearts are shattered. Black Moon Wild Canid Sanctuary remains responsible for the daily care of 26 canids who require food, medical care, enrichment, safety, and love every day.

We are showing up for them the best we can while carrying an unimaginable loss. Mētztli and Jackson are mourning more than a sanctuary rescue or resident, but their beloved baby girl.

Thank you for loving Elara. Thank you for holding space for our grief. And thank you for helping us continue the work of care that she became a part of, however briefly.

Run free, sweet girl. Forever loved. Forever our baby girl.

🖤✨ “I’m tired of people calling me cute… I’m vicious!” ✨🖤

Elara would like the record to show she is, in fact, a terrifying apex predator… not a baby. Absolutely not a baby. 😤🐺

(Please ignore the dramatic side-eye, tiny snoot boops, and suspiciously adorable face.)

Our sanctuary is full of powerful, intelligent wolfdogs who are so often misunderstood — and Elara is here to remind everyone that being cute and being fierce are not mutually exclusive. 🖤

Support the tiny “apex predator” and the rest of the pack by donating, sharing, or checking out our wishlist + sanctuary links in bio. Every bit of support helps us continue rescuing and caring for misunderstood wolfdogs like Elara. 🖤🐺

Motherhood, to me, is no longer confined to bloodlines or tradition. I’m Mētztli Wolf, the founder of and 🌿

Motherhood is stewardship. Protection. Kinship. The courage to nurture life in a world organized around extraction.

As a cycle breaker, Mother’s Day carries grief, complexity, and reverence all at once. That’s the healing work and the medicine. But through the wolves, wolfdogs, rescues, land work, and beings in my care, I’ve come to understand “mothering” as something much older than colonial family structures.

Re-matriation. Re-indigenization. Landback.

Not trends. Not aesthetics. But the restoration of reciprocal relationship — with land, community, animals, ancestors, and ourselves.

Nature already models the balance we keep trying to dominate our way around.

Care is circular.
Belonging is inherent.
Protection is sacred duty.

Today we honor the matriarchs, cycle breakers, protectors, nurturers, and caretakers rebuilding relational worlds inside collapsing systems.

Happy Mother’s Day to the ones creating safety where there once was or is survival.

“The most beautiful things in life aren’t things… they’re DOGS! 🤪🐺🥚”

And today, the pack got to celebrate with one of their favorite enrichment treats… hardboiled Easter eggs! 🥚✨

Watching their excitement, curiosity, and pure joy reminds us that happiness really is simple — a safe place, nourishing food, and a little spring magic shared together.

Each egg is more than just a treat — it’s:
🥚 Enrichment for curious minds
🥚 Nutritious protein for strong bodies
🥚 A moment of joy for animals who deserve so much love

And honestly… there’s nothing more beautiful than seeing our sanctuary canids experience comfort, safety, and celebration. 🖤🐺🐕

We captured some sweet moments here, but there are even more photos and videos of the pack enjoying their Easter festivities over on Patreon — including some absolutely adorable egg-chomping chaos. 🤪

Welcome home, Odin. 🖤🐺
This sweet soul wasn’t abandoned — he was (and still is) deeply loved.

From puppyhood, Odin was raised by a devoted dad who carries him in ink and in heart. When life shifted, Odin’s canine lady companion passed away and anxiety grew, his dad made the most selfless choice: to give Odin what every heart deserves — time, care, and companionship.

After a loving foster stop that wasn’t quite the right fit, Odin’s journey brought him all the way to North Carolina… to our Freyja. ‘s service dog. 🐕‍🦺 Who lost 3 sisters not long ago.

Their meeting? Pure tenderness. ✨
Soft noses, instant trust, and two hearts quietly finding home in each other — just in time for Valentine’s Day & Lupercalia weekend. 💘🐺

Now Odin lives alongside Freyja as part of our sanctuary family — turning grief into grace, and love into something beautifully new.

🐾 If his story warms your heart:
• Join our Patreon for exclusive pack updates
• Or set up monthly support on Zeffy to virtually adopt Odin and our other canids

Some love stories just need the right place to land. That place for Odin is
Drop a 🖤 to welcome him home.

Thank you to for sponsoring his journey to safety & initial veterinary care. 🙏🏽💜🐺

Seacrest Wolf Preserve Inc. is in dire need of support and they only have a couple weeks to secure safety for 22 animals. Please share & help as you’re able. 🙏🏽🐺

As we move into this process, we understand and appreciate the outcry of support. Right now, our legal team is working every possible avenue that there is. We want to stress that the options are dwindling – an appeal does not stop the eviction. Our team is actively reaching out to other attorneys for suggestions, ideas, and possible routes we could take.

Many of you have expressed concern about our silence over these past months. Please understand that for much of this journey, we were guided — firmly and unequivocally — to remain quiet. There were reasons we could not speak, details we could not share, and moments when restraint was not a choice but a necessity. Only recently have we been able to step forward and find our voice.

We need to stress that the issue is not land; Seacrest has access to land we could move to tomorrow – money and time are where the issue lies. Without a miracle, without over hundreds of thousands of dollars immediately, we have nowhere to begin. Fencing, labor, and moving of the animals themselves to a new facility is costly, and the rebuilding of a potential new facility would take time we do not have. That has always been our issue; we have had land secured for the majority of this trial, but have not been able to acquire the funding to build upon that land. Twenty days, at this point, is an impossibility unless we have a miracle.

To those of you reaching out, we hear you. Rest assured the staff are not ignoring your calls, nor suggestions, but our lines are being flooded with support and it has been difficult to keep up in the wake of this horrible news. Every suggestion is heard, every idea discussed, and every voice recognized as the community bands together for the animals. We have to keep talking, keep sharing, keep this circulating so that as many people see the plight of these animals as possible.

Thank you- the SWP Pack

A Lakota elder once told me that “the beaver was the first NDN since colonization”. That our fish 🎣 and rivers have never been the same, shrinking and disappearing, since 1492.

We talked about the impact that has on today’s landscape, our weather, our relatives, our spirits. 🌬️ We agreed that colonialism is a sickness.

When he asked me about “what I do”, I told him about Black Moon — and he smiled.

I didn’t have to explain to him WHY we do what we do. To be Indigenous is to understand the plight of the beaver 🦫 and the wolf 🐺, from personal and ancestral experiences.

We look forward to sharing the magic and medicine of Black Moon Wild Canid Sanctuary with you here and in person in the future. Happy Lunar New Year 🧧 💛.

Beavers are emerging as unlikely heroes in the fight against climate change and raging fires. By building their intricate dams, these natural engineers create lush wetlands that act as powerful firebreaks against spreading flames. While surrounding forests are incinerated, the areas managed by beavers stay green and hydrated, providing a safe sanctuary for countless wildlife species during disasters. 🦫

This "green zone" effect occurs because beaver ponds keep the soil and vegetation deeply soaked with water. Even the most intense wildfires struggle to cross these emerald patches, proving that beavers are essential for landscape resilience. Conservationists now view these animals as a cost-effective tool for protecting the planet. Restoring beaver populations is no longer just about biodiversity—it is a strategic move to build a natural defense against the increasing threat of climate-driven heat. ✨
