University of Minnesota Extension is an equal opportunity educator and employer. Hennepin County 4-H supports high quality sustainable clubs and programs, which allow young people (grades Kindergarten through one year after high school) to measurably improve their learning and leadership through educational programs and applied research. We work with youth, families, volunteers, interns, and partn

ers to provide intentional space for young people to discover their interests, develop focused skills, and then connect those skills and interests to future possibilities. Much of Hennepin County 4-H's work focuses on engaging youth in meaningful leadership opportunities. We seek to provide opportunities where youth can discover their personal leadership abilities, build critical thinking and decision-making skills, and contribute their leadership skills to making a positive impact in their community.

If you've been watching the Olympics, you may have spotted a Minnesota 4-H alum! Or, at least, seen the headline he's been making in comparisons to "pommel horse guy" from the 2024 summer Olympics.
Aidan Oldenburg, Blue Earth County alum, has taken his performance skills honed at the Minnesota State Fair to the world's biggest stage as the lead for the Team USA Men's Curling's team. Congratulations Aidan!

4-H in Blue Earth County prepared Aidan Oldenburg for life's spotlight moments.

After tragedy, words are HARD..... Thankful for words and resources from Minnesota Association for Children's Mental Health. Parents and those who care for young people check out some of their resources and as you are having conversations consider these tips.
1. Communicate Appropriately: Evaluate what is appropriate to share with your child about recent events. It's important that they know even when things feel big and scary, it is safe for them to talk with you.
2. Listen Actively: Your child may have a lot to say or very little, but it is important that you give them your undivided attention and support them as they process their thoughts and feelings out loud.
3. Remain Calm: This is scary for adults, too. Remember to remain calm, as best you can, when having a conversation with a child. Your calmness will help them feel more secure.
4. Turn Off the Media: Though it is helpful for adults to stay informed, overconsumption of media around an event can cause further distress for children.
5. Monitor for Changes in Behavior: Tragedy and trauma can activate a number of emotions for children. Monitor their behavior for any short and long term changes that may require additional mental health support.
