Wood Lake Battlefield Preservation Association (WLBPA) A 501 (C) 3 Organization BATTLE HISTORY: On September 23, 1862, the decisive battle at Wood Lake between Dakota warriors and the U.S.

military ended the Dakota outbreak that began on August 18. Anguished over failed treaty obligations and hunger, a warrior faction decided to go to war and persuaded Little Crow to lead their war effort. Henry Sibley was appointed to lead an expedition against the Dakota. On September 22, Sibley and 1,619 troops camped near the Wood Lake site. That night, Little Crow's warriors took positions alon

g the road leading to the Upper Sioux Agency. A group of soldiers left early on the 23rd to get vegetables abandoned at the Upper Sioux Agency. This action caused some of the warriors to prematurely open the attack. Alerted by the gunfire, the U.S. military was able to mount a counterattack. The majority of Little Crow's warriors were too far down the road to get into the battle. When the element of surprise was lost and with only fragmented forces, Little Crow withdrew from the battlefield. Upon return to his camp, he realized that the Dakota who had guarded the hostages would not release these captives without a fight. He felt his position was even more compromised and ordered his followers to flee the area, thus ending the U.S./Dakota War of 1862.
