The Midwest Institute of Scandinavian Culture, Sons of Norway, and the Waldemar Ager Association invite the public to celebrate Syttende Mai (May 17, 1814), Norwegian Constitution Day.
The annual event usually brings 125+ people together to celebrate with a banquet and a program. This year, the event takes place on May 16, at the Holiday Inn Eau Claire, South, 4751 Owen Ayres Court. Social period starts at 5:30. Banquet begins at 6. Program follows the meal. You don’t need to be Norwegian to enjoy this night out.
Starting April 12, tickets may be purchased at Customer Service, Festival Foods, Mall Drive only, in Eau Claire, or
online at agerhouse.org. Sales end on May 12.
Presentation: Friluftsliv: Celebrating Open Air Life and Traditions in All Seasons
For Debra Raye King and Thomas Wayne King, every day is an opportunity to celebrate their Norwegian heritages and the joys of Friluftsliv in Northwestern Wisconsin. Preparing for weather challenges, Pakledning, is important to them in every season. Their presentation highlights the joys of hiking, skiing, skating and tending their flock of registered Icelandic wool sheep at Sunny Cove Farm overlooking Lake Superior.
Presenters: Debbi and Tom--authors, folk composers, and UW-Eau Claire alumni--live, write, and create in Solon Springs, Wisconsin. Sunshine, their Shetland Sheepdog, romps with them at their forested homestead and hilltop farm. Debbi and Tom are descendants of Norwegian immigrant families whose stories, music, photos and treasured items will touch your hearts and inspire you to celebrate the open-air life.

The topic for the Wahlstrom Workshop was Scandinavian Food! There were wonderful Nordic meals prepared by our board members and volunteers including these traditional desserts! Students attended workshops on Nordic Coffee Culture, Nordic Food and Sustainability, and Sugar and Spice. Other cultural activities including dancing with Finn Hall, wood carving, weaving and other crafts had participants engaged and busy all weekend. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this a wonderful and educational event! Plans are already under way for the 2025 workshop!

We are delighted to open registration for the 2024 Wahlström Nordic Workshop at Beaver Creek Reserve, Fall Creek, WI on February 23-25 2024. The theme for this year's workshop is Nordic Food Traditions in Dialogue.

Tammikuun nimi kuvastaa sen sijoittumista talven keskelle. Tammi tarkoittaa joissakin murteissa sydäntä, keskikohtaa tai ydintä, toisaalta napaa tai akselia. Tammikuu on siis talven sydänaluetta. Tammikuun ja helmikuun käsittävä sydäntalvi on mielletty yhdeksi ajanjaksoksi. Tammikuu on sydänkuista ensimmäinen eli »isotammi», helmikuu taas »pikkutammi».

Toisen näkemyksen mukaan tammikuun nimi tulee siitä, että se on vuoden kovinta aikaa ja tammi on tunnetusti puista kovin ja kestävintä. Tammikuu onkin ollut parasta aikaa rakennus- ja muiden tarvepuiden kaatamiselle. Sanottiin, että tammikuussa kaadettu puu on lujaa. Se ei lahoa helposti, ei homehdu, eikä siihen ei liioin tule toukkia eivätkä hirret halkeile.

Tammikuun vahvuus ja lujuus ei heijastunut ainoastaan puumateriaaliin. Kuuta ei pidetty hyvänä ajankohtana suurempien töiden aloittamiselle, m***a kaiken sydänkuilla hankitun tai saadun sanottiin olevan lujaa ja riittävää. Muun muassa verkon rihmat tuli kehrätä sydänkuilla, jotta verkosta tulisi mahdollisimman vahva.

Tammikuussa alkaa pitkähkö juhlaton ajanjakso, niin sanotut »selkäviikot» eli »härkäviikot». Sydäntalvella koko elollinen luonto on lepotilassa. Mikään ei kasva, sanottiin että kotieläimetkin syövät huonommin sydänkuilla. Luonnossa kuitenkin tapahtuu: karhuemo synnyttää poikasensa talvipesään ja made lähtee uimaan kohti kutupaikkoja.

Tammikuun on helmikuun ohella vuoden kylmin kuukausi. Leutoa tammikuuta saattoi seurata kylmä helmikuu. »Kun tammikuulla loskaa, niin helmikuulla kostaa». Jos taas tammikuussa oli tasaista säätä, niin helmikuun keleistä odotettiin epävakaita. Päivittäisistä säänvaihteluista ilmoittivat pihapiirin varikset. Jos varis raakkui sydänkuilla aamusella, tuli nuoskat, jos iltasella, tuli pakkaset.

Leuto tammikuu tiesi hyvää satoa, koska kasvukaudesta tulisi pitempi: maa ei routaannu syvältä ja vesistöissä on ohuemmat jäät, luonto herää kasvukauteen nopeammin. Toisaalta Pohjois-Suomessa on arveltu, että leuto tammikuu tietäisi hallaa heinäkuulle. Suojasää ja vesisade olivat monin paikoin toivottuja, sillä »jos tammikuussa vettä sataa, saa kylvää vaikka suon napaan».
