The Rock Falls Creamery shipped its first batch of butter--800 pounds of it--on August 19, 1902. It was incorporated as a cooperative in October of that year with $6000 (about $194,000 adjusted for inflation) in capital spread amongst 120 shareholders. This building, which measured 26 x 42 feet, was constructed and outfitted by the Chicago Building Company at a cost of $4,450 ($144,000).

When the creamery opened, it was taking in milk from about 300 cows. Because Rock Falls didn't have a train station, butter was taken to the Caryville station, where it was picked up by a special train out of Menomonie every Wednesday. From there, the butter made its way to the Lesserman Brothers, who were merchants in Chicago. Not quite two years into production, the creamery had shipped 126, 890 pounds of butter and had taken in $26,984.64 ($841,763) in cash. To that point, the largest monthly payment to one farmer was $108 ($3,369). --Jodi, CVM Archivist
